Rothko Chapel - The 14 large scale paintings seem all black at first glance, but once your eyes adjust to the dimly lit space, the works come alive with so much variation in tone, hue and lustre. It was a slow build and a calming, spiritual environment.
Cy Twombly Gallery - Samplings of his work from the 1950's through 1990's. So much of his work feels vulnerable to me. I loved standing next to these enormous pieces - the scale of most of them is breathtaking
Rauschenberg's Fabrics from the 1970's - I had been previously unaware of these works, but found them so delicate. Many of the works played off of tension, balance, and a delicate layering of imagery transfered onto the fabric.
I created this painting for a show called "Raw" at Surface Gallery last April. The theme of the show inspired me to allow the rawness of the materials to speak. To relinquish the need to control everything. There is beauty in that both in an art practice and other facets of life. Sometimes releasing what no longer serves us is the way forward. As I continue my practice, and in my life pursuits, I want to remember this lesson.
