We are proud to congratulate graduate student Iain Bisset on being awarded a prestigious U.S. Department of (DOE) Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Fellowship. Advised by Professor Bhaskar Dutta, Iain will spend the remainder of his PhD at Los Alamos National Laboratory, collaborating with leading scientists across institutions on cutting edge neutrino research.

Iain received the award for his proposed research project, “Developing Rigorous Methods of Model Discernment in Neutrino Phenomenology.” The origin of dark matter and the smallness of neutrino masses remain two of the most fundamental open questions in particle physics. In his fellowship proposal, Iain aims to address these challenges by developing machine learning based techniques to identify experimentally accessible signatures of new physics.

His work will focus on efficiently distinguishing rare signals from complex background data, enhancing sensitivity to subtle features in particle interactions such as kinematics, timing, and topology. These approaches will help enable the identification and characterization of dark sector interactions and the underlying mechanisms responsible for generating neutrino masses.

The DOE SCGSR award recognizes outstanding academic accomplishments, the merit of the proposed research, and the potential to make important contributions to the mission of the DOE.

We crush this 55 gallon drum using physics!

A small amount of water in the drum is heated up; it generates steam, which fills the drum. Then, the drum is sealed, trapping the steam inside the barrel. When we place the barrel in ice water, the steam inside the drum condenses, and the pressure inside drops dramatically. However, there is still atmospheric pressure outside, which crushes the drum! This is a dramatic demonstration of the power of atmospheric pressure. Remember, don't try this at home!

Jumping ring hits the ceiling. How?!

An AC current from the outlet flows through the coils of a solenoid, generating a time-dependent magnetic field that oscillates at 60 Hz. This magnetic field creates a time-dependent magnetic flux through the aluminum ring. An AC current is then induced in the ring according to Faraday’s law. When a current-carrying ring is placed in the magnetic field of a solenoid, there will be force acting on the ring. This force oscillates in time, but its average is not zero. That's why the ring jumps.

So how did we get it to hit the ceiling? We cooled the ring in liquid nitrogen, lowering its electrical resistance. Lower resistance → stronger current → bigger force → higher jump. SPIN FASTER BY GOING SMALLER! 🌀

You can try this demonstration yourself using a spinning stool (or office chair) and two small weights to explore the power of conservation of angular momentum. You start by spinning slowly with arms stretched out to the sides. But when the weights are pulled close to the body, the spinning suddenly speeds up.

This happens because, when no outside torques are acting, an object’s angular momentum stays the same. But the angular momentum is a product of the rotational velocity and rotational inertia which is basically how the weight is spread out. Changing it—arms wide versus arms close—affects how fast the body spins. Pulling the arms in makes you spin faster to conserve angular momentum. It’s the same principle figure skaters use when they pull their arms in to spin faster. To feel it, you need to be on ice, or on a rotating stool with low friction, or floating in space!

When the copper guillotine blade falls through the magnetic field of the strong magnets, the motion creates swirling electric currents in the blade, called eddy currents. These currents produce their own magnetic fields, which push against the original magnetic field, creating a force that resists the blade's motion. This resistance slows the blade dramatically, dissipating its energy as heat and safely stopping it before it reaches Dr. Dawson's neck.
