SOFB GIRL (KIIROI JACKET 2020) is based on a life-size wooden sculpture I created during my artist residency in London between 2019 and 2020. The original sculpture was 3D scanned and transformed into this soft vinyl figure.
The original wooden sculpture was carved from 21 laminated timber blocks, using only hand tools—a saw, chisels, planes, and knives—without any power tools.
That one-of-a-kind wooden sculpture was then 3D scanned and transformed into a palm-sized, mass-produced sculpture. With 12 points of articulation, it can be freely posed and enjoyed as a playable sculpture.
The paintwork faithfully recreates the colors of the original wooden sculpture.
Hope you enjoy it. 🙌

Artist statement
My expression began with translating the “movement” of breakdancing into figurative wood sculpture, and has always been rooted in “sculptural thinking” — expanding from there into drawing, canvas, photography, and video.
This solo exhibition 「TWO SPACES」 is held simultaneously across two venues: Sukima in Kuramae and Sculpture Center Tokyo in Higashi-Nippori. These two spaces work in tandem to present new photographic works that could only exist here. It is an idea born as a counterpoint to my ongoing “Transfer of Volume” series — paintings made across two canvases at the same time.
Alongside these photographs, flat and sculptural works will also be on view.
It is a very experimental endeavor, and honestly I’m not sure myself how it will turn out — but please, actually travel between the two galleries, make your own transfer of volume, and experience the two spaces for yourself.

隙間 presents「TWO SPACES」, a solo exhibition by B-BOY sculptor Taku Obata.
Rooted in the bodily intelligence of B-BOY culture, Obata’s practice seeks a meeting point between breakdance and contemporary art across multiple disciplines. Drawing from “sculptural thinking”, his work materializes the body at the threshold between movement and stillness — translating the invisible energies of gravity and rhythm into forms that are at once geometric and organic.
Presented simultaneously across two venues — 隙間 and Sculpture Center Tokyo — the exhibition extends Obata’s 「Transfer of Volume」 series. In this ongoing body of work, he moves between two canvases as if dancing, shifting mass from one surface to the other. From a single physical act, a negative and a positive emerge: not only a trace of movement, but an articulation of the body’s presence and its absence.
The exhibition also draws attention to the particular structural qualities of each space. At 隙間, the glass windows are transformed into a physical canvas, alongside a glimpse into an unfinished sculpture shown here for the first time. A new series of photographs, made specifically for this exhibition, captures both venues in fragments — creating a physical resonance between the two spaces.
We invite you to experience Taku Obata’s new work across both venues, as the body expands into space and crosses the boundary between two distinct places.

I carved this wooden sculpture 10 years ago.
It was later 3D-scanned, and this piece was created from that data.
The second image shows the original wooden sculpture.
From the third image onward, you can see the process of making it.
I never imagined that a sculpture I made 10 years ago would take this form.
This form became smaller, turned into metal, set with stones, given a chain—
and now it can be worn and carried on the body.
A sculpture originally made to be placed now hangs from the body.
It’s kind of crazy.
It’s interesting.
It feels very HIP HOP, and I like that.

「It Takes Two」という題名の通り、

Our two-person exhibition at in Kyoto with is now in its final two days.
The last day is Saturday, April 25 🔥
Please come by if you haven’t yet.
“It Takes Two” has been extended due to its great reception and will be on view until April 25.
Please stop by together with KYOTOGRAPHIE.
The first photo shows a piece I made on the first day of my residency in Kyoto.
On the second day, I created the exhibition work, and from the third day, Koganezawa joined, and through trial and error, the works took their current form.
Koganezawa’s sculpture hangs from the ceiling, gently swaying with neon.
My sculpture stands firmly on the ground, resisting gravity.
At first, we planned to combine them by adding neon to my sculpture as a collaborative work.
However, the light was too strong and obscured the structure, so we abandoned that idea.
As a result, Koganezawa created his own sculpture, and two contrasting works emerged.
In Kyoto, we created two canvases simultaneously together,
and each of us made one sculpture, resulting in two sculptures on view.
As the title “It Takes Two” suggests,
two people, two canvases, and two sculptures.
The chemical reaction between sculptural thinking and cinematic thinking has resulted in a very strong exhibition.
We hope you can experience it on this occasion.

I’ll be at the gallery on the final day. 👋
This is a sculpture I created during my residency at in Kyoto.
The piece stands entirely through joinery (“hozo”) and its own weight, without any screws, bolts, or adhesives.
In our initial planning, (Kane-san) and I decided to “do something that could only be done here.”
The plan was for me to build a form using the lumber found in the gallery, and for Kane-san to attach neon lights to it.
However, Kane-san could not make it for the first two days (lol), so I started the work alone.
At first, I was overthinking it, telling myself, “Since neon will be attached, I need to make it sturdy.” I spent half a day sketching, but nothing was moving forward.
Eventually I realized, “At this rate, I’ll never finish.”
So I changed my approach and decided to build it intuitively, almost like a drawing, following the vibe of the moment.
With Kane-san not there, I gradually forgot about the neon altogether and became obsessed with creating a sculpture using only the minimum necessary structure.
It all started with a single joint.
Using that as the axis, I abstracted and distilled the pose of a life-sized human body into a minimal form, eventually arriving at this sculpture.
I have always been fascinated by the beauty of the armature used in clay modeling itself, and I have long wanted to make a sculpture that extracts only the structure and movement of the human body.
The conditions of the site—the lumber lying around the gallery and the limitation of using only a saw, chisel, plane, and carving knife—became the perfect environment.
Those restrictions confined me, but at the same time expanded the possibilities of expression.
Without these circumstances, I think this work would have taken much longer to come into existence.
Suddenly, a completely new series was born in Kyoto (lol).
As a contrast to my figurative sculptures, I plan to continue refining and developing this series.
Please come and experience this new series, born in Kyoto.
