From the classroom to the Great Barrier Reef ✨🐠

For Bradfield Senior College student Emma King‑Li, learning hasn’t just happened in the classroom, it’s taken her straight to the world’s largest coral reef ecosystem. 🌏🪸

While studying a Certificate II in Workplace Skills (BSB20120) and Certificate III in Screen and Media (CUA31020) as part of her HSC, Emma’s curiosity and drive led to her being selected for the highly competitive Lizard Island Coral Reef Study Tour.

From sunrise starts to snorkelling alongside marine researchers, she fully immersed herself in the experience, learning about coral ecosystems, marine life and the incredible people dedicating their lives to protecting our oceans. 🔬🤿

“It gave me a lot more insight into not only what a potential career would look like in these types of marine sciences, but also… the impact of marine science and that has been a big influence as I’ve continued through to the end of the HSC.” 💙

That same curiosity and commitment has been recognised, with Emma recently receiving the 2025 Bradfield Senior College Director’s Award. She's also taken an active role helping shape the BSC’s student led newsletter, Bradnews. 🏆👏

✨ Big dreams start in the right space - just ask Susie and Steven! 💡

Both students are moving toward their goals, thanks to the Suburban Study Hub Macquarie Fields. Located at TAFE NSW Macquarie Fields, it’s a supportive space for students in tertiary study to find focus, motivation and momentum. 📚💬🎯

For Susie, juggling online university study and her part-time job as an Educational Support Officer was tough. She needed a supportive space to stay focused and create a routine. The Hub has given her exactly that, a welcoming space filled with students who are on similar journeys. 💻🌟

“I like that it’s a quiet place to come to, but still with people around. Studying alone online was difficult - the Hub helps me stay on track.”

Steven quickly found his rhythm at the Hub, since starting a Diploma of Counselling (CHC51015) earlier this year. With longer opening hours, group-friendly spaces, and workshops from visiting universities, he says the Hub is the best place to improve his study routine. 🚀📘

“It is a quiet, comfortable space where everyone is focused and respectful. There are many opportunities available through the Hub.”

The Suburban Study Hub Macquarie Fields was also recently named winner of the Outstanding Education Project at the Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue Boomtown Awards. 👏

⚓ Navigating Careers, One Seafarer at a Time ⚓

At TAFE NSW Newcastle, Carmen Blanco and a team of highly qualified maritime teachers use Full Mission Class A bridge simulators to deliver hands-on, world-class learning. This approach blends traditional navigation and good seamanship with modern electronic navigation systems. Students develop the highest standards of navigational safety, situational awareness, and bridge team management. 🚢🧭

Carmen said, "The new AWA Wärtsilä Maritime Simulator at our Newcastle campus is a game-changer, giving students access to cutting-edge technology that replicates real bridge environments, dynamic weather, and complex scenarios. It’s the closest thing to being at sea without leaving the classroom." 🗺️🛳️

Students progress through structured learning stages as they master visual and radar fixing, manual passage planning, tidal calculations, and the Collision Avoidance Rules, while integrating these skills with Electronic Charts, radar, and integrated bridge systems.

Carmen added, "Through simulator scenarios impossible to safely replicate at sea, the teaching team builds officers who confidently handle complex scenarios and challenges. We are producing professional watchkeeping officers and Masters, equipped with competence, adaptability, and sound judgment for modern maritime operations."

International Day of Families - celebrating a home away from home 💙

Our students travel from around the state to TAFE NSW Kurri Kurri and learn specific skills such as aboriculture, farriery, and sports turf. These practical classes run for a week intermittently throughout the year, and part of the package is they stay at the Hunter Valley Hotel Academy accommodation.

BB Café is within these facilities and Brooke runs the front of house and Jackie is the chef. Together, they fuel the students with healthy food and healthy minds.

For Brooke and Jackie, being "TAFE Away Mums" at the Hunter Valley Hotel Academy, is about creating a true home away from home. 🏡 😄

It means offering a safe, supportive environment where students can focus on their studies, knowing there’s always someone there to guide, support or simply listen. From comfortable accommodation and nourishing meals to encouragement and care, this role is built on connection.

Brooke said, "For many students living away from their families, that support makes all the difference. It helps ease the transition into independent living, builds confidence and fosters a strong sense of belonging. We celebrate their wins, stand alongside them through challenges, and remind them they’re never alone on their journey."

BB Café is where friendships are formed and support networks grow: "The inclusive atmosphere welcomes everyone, and seeing students support one another is one of the most rewarding parts of working in the TAFE NSW environment."

Today, we celebrate families in all their forms and the communities that help students thrive. 💛

🎨 Trade Pathways: Anthony is teaching skills that work for trades 🎯

Meet Anthony Cridland, Painting and Decorating Teacher at TAFE NSW Ultimo, who’s passionate about helping students succeed in the trade.

For Anthony, teaching is about mentorship and teaching hands‑on skills is vital. Students are exposed to a wide range of painting and decorating skills, including some they may not encounter in everyday work. That means when opportunities arise on the job, they’re ready and confident, having already practised those skills in a supported learning environment.

Anthony also sees firsthand the impact of the Trade Pathways for Experienced Workers program. Many come with years on the tools without formal training. Through Trade Pathways, they strengthen their knowledge and gain a nationally recognised qualification that validates their experience. 🖌️🏚️

💬 “Trade Pathways gives students so much. Earning a Certificate III in Painting and Decorating (CPC30620) builds confidence in their trade and life. It can lead to licences, starting their own business and even employing others. It really sets them up for the future.”

Trade Pathways is about opening doors to qualifications, confidence and long‑term career success. Learn more about the Trade Pathways for painting and decorating at TAFE NSW Ultimo on our website. Eligibility criteria apply and applications close 15 June 2026.
