The latest issue of Tabor Today traces the remarkable evolution of ships at Tabor—from Schooner Black Duck in 1918 to the 115-foot schooner that continues to shape generations of Seawolves today.
The story includes:
⚓ voyages to Bermuda, Nova Scotia, and through the Panama Canal
🌊 a Chicago World’s Fair appearance in 1933
🎬 visits from the cast of Moby Dick, including Gregory Peck
🏆 a 2019 Bermuda race victory by a crew of Tabor students
But at its heart, this story is about something bigger than ships.
For generations of students, Tabor Boy has been classroom, laboratory, leadership test, adventure, and rite of passage all at once—a place where young people learn lessons no textbook can fully teach.
As Walter Lillard wrote in 1923, students head seaward “to steer by the stars and to gain wisdom through communion with the deep, blue water.”
Some things at Tabor change. Some remain timeless.

It returned in 1979. Tabor was founded in 1876 as a coeducational institution, that later shifted to separate boys and girls, before briefly becoming all boys for just two decades.
The latest issue of Tabor Today explores the little-known history of the Girls’ School of Tabor Academy, established in 1916 during Walter Lillard’s reorganization of the school.
While Tabor evolved into a national boys boarding school, girls continued to study on campus through a separate—but closely connected—division that shared faculty, classes, performances, dances, and school traditions with the boys.
The story includes:
🏑 championship athletics teams
🎭 coeducational drama and music
📘 handmade yearbooks created by the students themselves
⚓ graduates who later served as Naval intelligence cryptographers during WWII
For decades, these students were an important part of the Tabor community, even if their story has not always been fully visible in school history.

At Tabor, the answer has evolved for more than 150 years.
The latest issue of "Tabor Today" dives into the history of Tabor’s visual identity in “Making Our Mark,” tracing everything from early student debates over school badges in the 1890s to the emergence of the red-and-black color tradition, the first formal shield mark, and the symbols that helped shape the School by the Sea® over generations.
One of the most fascinating details? Students themselves were part of the conversation from the very beginning. Even in 1892, they were already debating what kind of symbol should represent the school.
This story is part of the Spring 2026 issue of Tabor Today, created during Tabor’s sesquicentennial year and focused on the people, traditions, symbols, and stories that shaped the school.

By 1915, enrollment had fallen to fewer than a dozen students, and trustees had already signed an agreement to transfer the school to the town. Then, less than a month before the deal took effect, Walter Huston Lillard arrived—and changed the course of Tabor history.
The latest issue of Tabor Today explores the dramatic 150-year evolution of admissions, enrollment, and identity at Tabor—from graduating classes small enough to fit around a dinner table to the nationally and internationally recognized School by the Sea® we know today.
“The Measure of a School” traces the challenges, pivots, reinventions, and defining decisions that shaped Tabor across generations:
🌊 the embrace of the waterfront
🌍 international recruitment and travel
📚 the return to coeducation
⚓ the evolution of admissions and access
🏫 the ongoing balance between growth and community
It’s a story about far more than enrollment numbers. It’s about how schools survive change without losing their center.

Visitors to the Travis Roy Campus Center may notice a large propeller now hanging on the wall—a gift to Tabor in 1928 from trustee Richard F. Hoyt, an influential figure in early American aviation.
The propeller came from the *Josephine Ford*, the Fokker monoplane flown by Richard E. Byrd and Floyd Bennett over the North Pole in May 1926. Hoyt, who helped finance Byrd’s expeditions, later passed the propeller along to Tabor.
For decades, it hung in Lillard Hall and later Hayden Library before going into storage during the construction of the Travis Roy Campus Center. This spring, it returned to view.
A remarkable object. A wild Tabor connection. Very casual “there’s a North Pole flight propeller on campus” energy.
