At Sylvester, healing extends beyond medicine alone. A new Art Is Medicine exhibit featuring work from Mac Stone brings the calming power of nature into the Kenneth C. Griffin Cancer Research Building, transforming patient and visitor spaces through immersive photography of the Everglades.

The exhibit, "Ecology Meets Cancer Biology," highlights images of Florida’s wetlands while drawing a deeper connection between art, nature and scientific discovery.

“When we are going through challenging situations, especially ones as uncertain and foundation-shattering as a cancer diagnosis, one of the hardest things is to feel anchored,” Stone said. “Nature is healing, calming and helps center us.”

The installation is part of Sylvester’s broader Art Is Medicine initiative, which integrates art, wellness and survivorship care to support patients emotionally as well as physically.

For curator Desert Horse-Grant, the exhibit also reflects the parallels between nature and cancer research happening just steps away inside the building’s laboratories. “This collection pays homage to the complexity of nature and the hardworking doctors and scientists striving to develop cures for patients with cancer,” she said.

The exhibit arrives at a time when Sylvester researchers continue advancing translational medicine and exploring how the natural world may inform future therapies and scientific breakthroughs.
Happy Birthday, Dr. Nimer 🎉

We spent the day with Dalissa Tejera, APRN, MSN, clinical research nurse practitioner and APP supervisor in neuro-oncology, for a #DayInTheLife.

At Sylvester, turning research breakthroughs into effective treatments remains a top priority. From coordinating clinical trials to delivering compassionate, evidence-based care, nurses like Dalissa are central to advancing cancer research while keeping patients at the heart of everything we do. 🙌

Mother’s Day carries a deeper meaning for Rebeca Diaz and her daughter, Sarah. 🧡 After Rebeca was diagnosed with Stage 3B #endometrial #cancer in 2024, the two navigated surgery, #chemotherapy, #radiation and #immunotherapy together, emerging not only stronger, but inspired to help others facing cancer treatment.

Today, Rebeca shows no evidence of disease, and together the mother-daughter duo has turned their experience into action through More For Mom, a passion project that delivers care packages to patients receiving chemotherapy at Sylvester.

Inspired by the kindness her mother received during treatment, Sarah launched the initiative during her junior year of high school with the goal of supporting mothers battling cancer.

“These little gestures show that somebody’s thinking about you, and as a cancer patient, that’s so important,” Rebeca said.

Recently, Sarah, Rebeca and several volunteers returned to Sylvester for a Care Tour, delivering gift bags and encouragement directly to patients in the chemotherapy unit through a program coordinated by the Sylvester Survivorship and Supportive Care Institute.

“Not every patient has family or friends there with them during treatment,” said Tangela Hillery. “These small acts of kindness can make a tremendous difference.”

Survivorship can become something larger than recovery alone. For some patients and families, it becomes an opportunity to give back, build community and bring hope to others walking a similar path.
Dr. Matthew Abramowitz, a radiation oncologist at Sylvester, tells us 3 things men need to know about #prostate #cancer.
Twenty-three years ago, while working as a home health #nurse, Liceta Portela often had a little shadow, her daughter, Tabatha Portela, who never left her side. While other children might have been watching TV or playing games, Tabatha was watching her #mom’s compassionate care.

Today, Tabatha Portela is a registered nurse, and the mother-daughter duo both work at Sylvester. The duo sees their jobs as the culmination of a lifelong connection rooted in their desire to help others. 🧡

“She never treated people like a patient, but like a family member,” Tabatha Portela said. “That’s how she is, very caring. Seeing her do that, that’s what attracted me to nursing. And I feel like that’s what I do now.”

Liceta reflects, “There are days where I see her and I swear to you, on the inside I’m thinking, ‘I can’t believe she’s a nurse.’ I’m so happy.”

This #NursesWeek, we celebrate the inspiring story of Liceta and Tabatha Portela—a mother-daughter duo whose shared passion for nursing continues to make a difference.

Dr. Jessica Firdman Moore, a alumna and graduated PGY-4 OBGYN resident at /, is a stage 2B high-grade serous ovarian cancer survivor.

During her residency, Dr. Moore developed a passion for reproductive health advocacy and supporting women through their care. She eventually set her sights on becoming an oncologist. But before she could complete her training, cancer became a personal chapter in her story.

Diagnosed during residency, Jessica—an active, healthy, BRCA-positive woman who exercised regularly and prioritized wellness—knew something wasn’t right. Her diagnosis brought an unexpected sense of relief, knowing she would be treated at Sylvester, a place she trusted and trained.

She enrolled in the TEAL clinical trial and has shared her experience with DigniCap, fertility preservation and research participation as part of her journey. Dr. Moore will continue sharing her story across our channels to inspire and inform others navigating similar paths. 🩵
Five years after being awarded the prestigious (NCI) designation, we’ve earned it again. 🙌 In a state with the second-highest cancer burden in the U.S., the renewal affirms our institutional commitment to continue pursuing cancer cures and cements our role as the only designated cancer center in South Florida. We earned NCI’s high marks five years ago with innovative programs in clinical care, research and community outreach. For this renewal, we presented transformational new programs and initiatives, expanding our impact since the first NCI designation.

“Sylvester’s scientific contributions not only directly serve the needs of its community but also impact cancer care across the country and the globe by changing practice, influencing policy and shifting research paradigms,” said Dr. Stephen Nimer, who has led Sylvester, part of the University of Miami Health System and Miller School of Medicine, since 2012.
