Our handsome old scallywag Rogue needs a major surgery on his back leg, and we need to raise $5,000 to make it happen.
After seeing the specialists last week, the best option is to fuse the affected joint. It’s a big surgery involving plates, screws and several weeks of crate rest, but once healed it should allow Rogue to walk, run and enjoy his senior years without pain.
The surgery is expected to cost around $5,000 and after so many recent emergencies our vet funds are empty.

Rogue travelled all the way from WA 5 years ago with his best friend Shy after his owner was sadly forced to rehome them. Since then, they have been waiting patiently for a home together.
Sadly black dingoes like Rogue are so often overlooked for adoption, sponsorship and fundraising because of stigma and bias around their colour. But black dingoes are natural, beautiful and special, with around 10% of dingoes having a black coat.
Rogue might still be waiting for a family, but he has always been loved. Now we just need some help getting our beautiful old boy back on all four paws again 🖤
When I was just 4 weeks old, I was found beside the road curled up next to my brother after he was hit by a car. I had a badly broken leg and was almost completely blind because I was so malnourished. Luckily, kind people stepped in to help me. My leg was repaired with surgery and pins, and as I slowly gained weight and strength, my eyesight began to come back too. Now my vision is almost completely normal and you’d never guess what I went through. I run, climb, jump and play just like any other young dingo.
Because I was born in the wild, I can be a little shy when meeting new people. I like to take my time getting to know strangers, but once I trust you I’m affectionate, gentle and very loyal. I’ve been hand-raised by humans since I was tiny, so I really love being around my people. A quieter home would suit me best, ideally with older kids (12+) or adults only.
I’m great with other dogs when introductions are done slowly, and I absolutely love to play. I’d really enjoy a home with another friendly dog around my size (10kg+).
I walk well on lead and I’m learning that car rides can actually be pretty fun too. Like most dingoes, I shouldn’t ever be let off lead outside a secure area because we don’t usually have reliable recall.
I’m looking for a home without cats, birds, livestock or small animals, and I can’t live in an apartment. I need a secure backyard with 1.8m fencing, and possibly dig-proofing like sleepers or pavers along the fence line.

Buddy came into care at just 4 weeks old after being found beside the road with a broken leg and malnutrition.
Despite this rough start, as you can see he is a sweet and smiley boy!
He can be cautious of new people and take some time and patience to warm up to new people, however once he knows you he is affectionate and adores people.
Buddy is good with other dogs with slow introductions, and would love a home with another playmate.

We’re looking for reliable day volunteers from the great Canberra region who can commit to coming in once a fortnight (we run on a fortnightly roster), with a particular need for weekday availability.
🕙 Shift times: 10am – 4pm (includes a 45-minute lunch break)
You’ll be working alongside our experienced live-in volunteers and getting involved in the day-to-day care of the animals here at the rescue centre.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
• Cleaning and maintaining enclosures for foxes, dingoes and other animals (yes, this includes a lot of pooper scooping)
• Walking dingoes
• Grooming dingoes
• Preparing and feeding animals (including handling raw meat)
This is hands-on, physical work. Expect a large amount of walking (up to 10km across the day), working outdoors, and being on your feet most of the shift. You’ll need to be comfortable lifting up to 20kg. *If you don't feel up to this level of physical work we'd still love your help, please send us an email and we can chat about other ways you might be able to be involved outside of our regular kennel volunteering program.
No prior experience required, however experience with wildlife or timid rescue dogs is highly regarded.
Please note:
• No children under 16
• Volunteers aged 16–18 must be accompanied by an adult
• We can’t not accept every application and preference will go to people will experience and the ability to make a regular commitment and work as a part of a team, we do not generally take volunteers from Sydney due to the distance.

Unfortunately, it is illegal to release dingoes back into the wild in NSW, ACT and most parts of Australia, so these pups will need safe and committed adoptive families.
Dingoes are intelligent, sensitive animals who require secure 2.2m fencing or purpose-built enclosures, ongoing enrichment and companionship. We strongly prefer our dingoes to go to homes with another compatible dog or dingo. However, the siblings themselves cannot be rehomed together, as sibling dingoes often begin fighting as they mature.
Our adoption process includes:
• Application form
• Yard and fencing checks
• Meet and greets
• Trial period before adoption is finalised
We are very happy to help advise and assist adopters with fencing and enclosure set-ups, and we regularly travel throughout NSW, Victoria and the ACT for adoptions.
All pups will be desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and health checked prior to adoption.

Charlie went to visit Winnie again yesterday and while his recovery is slow, he is continuing to make steady improvements.
Yesterday his urinary catheter was removed and he has now been started on Minipress to help with bladder function. He also has more movement in his left leg and is sitting himself up much more consistently, which is really encouraging to see.
If he keeps improving like this, we are hopeful Winnie may even be able to come home as soon as this weekend.
Now that he is more stable, Winnie is also undergoing dental surgery today to remove the tooth we believe may have been the source of the spinal infection.
Thankfully he does appear to be responding to the antibiotics, but because of the severity of the infection and the antibiotic resistant pathogen involved, he will need to stay medication for 8 weeks.
Yesterday we also trialled two secondhand wheelchairs with Winnie to help him get around and build strength while his legs heal. Sadly both were too small and not supportive enough for him.
We would absolutely love to buy Winnie a properly fitted wheelchair:
Ideally with the front wheel attachment while Winnie builds strength in his front legs.
We know there are cheaper options out there, but after trialling a few we want to make sure Winnie has something supportive and properly fitted. It would also become a valuable piece of equipment for the rescue with so many seniors in care.

When we do our raffles, we like to put a different rescue animal on each ticket.
Rachel's ticket features handsome James the dingo, all the way from Albury. James was a rescued wild dingo, given to us by the RSPCA Albury, and named after one of the local rangers. James lives in a bachelor pack of dingoes here at the rescue centre with Ned, Ody and Djarlu. His most favourite hobby of all time is digging GIANT dens, we're talking5 bedrooms and a sunroom, enough for the whole family. Normally we see the bulk of the den digging done by female dingoes here at the rescue, but James is by far the best den architect and builder we've ever seen. Did you around know 10% of dingoes are black like James rather than the classic tan colour we often associate with dingoes (around 40-50% will be sandy/tan coloured).
These two are cheeky and playful siblings. They're both playful. cuddly, and love going for walks and runs with the volunteers.
Marlu would love a home with someone energetic so he can run and play everyday.
Yerra loves playing and cuddling, and needs a patient and understanding family.

Back in 2013 our rescue was still in its infancy. I was only 21 years old and had only been rescuing foxes for about two years.
The call came in the middle of winter, which is where Winnie got his name.
It came from almost 1000km away from a neonatal kitten carer. Some bushwalkers had found what they believed to be a “kitten” alone in the middle of a walking trail. After taking the “kitten” to a vet, he was passed on to her for care.
After two days she started to suspect this wasn’t a cat kitten at all, but potentially a fox kit.
At that age fox kits are almost entirely black, with their eyes and ears still closed. They weigh as little as 90 grams and can be incredibly hard to identify.
I asked her to send me a photo and even then I still wasn’t certain. Eventually I asked one strange question:
“What does he smell like?”
Fox kits have a really distinct musky earthy smell, almost like decaying leaves or a ferret.
“Yes,” she said. “He definitely does not smell like a cat kitten.”
So I got in the car and made the two-day drive to bring him back to our rescue.
Winnie weighed just 110 grams when he arrived.
At that age he needed to be bottle fed every two hours, stimulated to toilet and constantly kept warm because he couldn’t regulate his own body temperature yet.
These days we have humidicribs and proper rescue equipment. Back then we had heat packs, hot water bottles and plastic tubs lined with blankets set up in the living room of our tiny rental house in Canterbury Sydney. (continued in the comments.)
