If you ask me to pick a favourite I’d say it’s a toss up between Glacier and Katmai, but one of those is significantly harder to get to 😄

But seriously, it gets dark at 3pm so make sure to come early enough to enjoy the ice sculptures before they turn on the lights! And maybe budget for two full days as the park is MASSIVE and the lines can be long for the ferris wheel and the huge slide.
Ice and Snow world usually opens in late December (this year was December 17!) and runs until February. Everything is built from scratch every year, using ice blocks from surrounding bodies of water.
China has really thought through everything to make the experience smooth for visitors to the point that you can
- take the metro here directly and avoid parking struggles
- rent winter clothes right on site, or even at the airport
- warm up inside several huge pavilions located onsite, where you’ll also find food and indoor entertainment
- rent tubes to drag the kids around
You do need to be prepped for very cold temperatures! Since we had been travelling for four months prior to this, we only brought the kids’ winter gear and decided to rent the adult ones onsite.

Some of my favorite stills from this past year. The year I quit my corporate job after 10 years to be more present with the kids. The year we finally tried Boundless Life after talking about it for years. The year I got some of my biggest and most exciting partnerships in this crazy side gig that grew out of a strong passion for photography.
I’m grateful for every one of these moments we got to experience, and never take any of them for granted.
I’m not sure what next year will bring but I sure hope I get to keep watching the kids grow up and shape their beautiful brains with world experiences. We only get to do this life once, and I’m determined to make the most of it.

I felt like a fish out of water trying to plan anything for China but luckily our hotel just did everything for us useless foreigners and we just followed their proposed itinerary.
Visiting national parks in China felt like a breeze (but also kind of like Disneyland). It’s like a one way experience with a hop-on-hop-off shuttle system that takes you in one direction and you can explore as much or as little as you like. Everything was done with public transport so no need to stress about parking or traffic.

This just opened a few days ago and is absolutely incredible. I’ve been dreaming of making it out here for a couple years and so glad we finally got to experience it.
And yes, we packed the kids full winter getup for exactly these 2 days of our 4 month trip 😅
