My uncle gave me some pan de muerto before I left, bread meant to celebrate the dead, and I couldn’t shake the feeling of death after that. I still can’t put my finger on it. So much has changed this last year, pilgrims lost to violence, cane workers parted with loved ones, and a changing Atencingo is struggling to keep the cane workers safe.
The wildest absurdity is that we are all forced to confront time when we meet. To see new wrinkles form and new faces appear. Dani jokes that one day I’ll be an elder like Don Diego, and that she’ll still be young like me. An odd reunion of exuberant friends that meet once a year to celebrate the sugar harvest, and yet they have become my deepest bonds. I cannot imagine a world without them. As the world hardens, they are there every year to remind me of who I am.
The promise of our town is simple, journey 100-miles to the biggest church in Mexico City, ask Our Lady of Guadalupe for a wish, and promise to return three years. We are all growing up together, choosing to walk life together, and most of us will have the honor of dieing together. Felix completed his 42nd march this year. Some pilgrims have journeyed 30, 40, 50 years now, a testament to their madness. This is my fifth walk, my 500th mile by foot, and still my promise to the Lady of Guadalupe is the same..to return. So here I am.
I finished my pilgrimage and returned to my grandmothers house only to attend a rezo, a communal prayer for a deceased family member. I know this year was meant to teach me about death, or prepare me for it. Or maybe it was meant to teach me about life. I don’t know and it haunts me.

Should I talk about the dehydration that began to set in — a suffocating thirst that I wish on no one. Or about the hallucinations that distorted the roads we walked on, a dizziness that blurred our angels from our demons. Or the silence. Oh, the silence. It was in that quiet that I met my most wounded self, and learned to tame him, to calm him, and to finally hear him. Draping her shawl around him, I’ve let the roses protect him now.
I’ve learned to love all of the pilgrims. A wondrous group of souls and characters that have become my closest friends. An annual pilgrimage for the devout, for the delusioned and for the brave. I’m so proud to have made it four years now and I hope to one day walk like our elders, like Don Diego, like Don Raymundo. I’ve learned to respect the wrinkles they’ve earned from these annual walks — 30, 40 years and counting. An accomplishment that outweighs anything that society can give me. I can see a glaze over their eyes—the holy.
I began my 3-year promise as a broken pilgrim, in search of miracles and a divine mother to guide me. Lost in my own hurt, I arrived and humbly asked our Lady of Guadalupe for a wish, something to believe and hold on to, to prove her divinity. A miracle to help me believe. My promise was to return for 3 years in exchange for a granted wish. As I return on year 4 I can’t help but bow. I am here to say thank you, I believe now. And I will return as long as I am able to march along the pilgrims of Atencingo.
In 2019, I made a promise to our matriarchal saint, the Lady of Guadalupe, that I’d complete our sugar pilgrimage three times. A 100-mile walk from our local chapel through Mexico’s grueling terrains. It’s believed that if you complete the three journeys She grants you a wish.
I’m proud of myself for walking through the pain. I’m proud of my legs for carrying me when my thoughts were too heavy to lift my head. I stared at the ground the whole way but I did it. This third year I wished for a miracle, something to restore my faith. So I guess now I just have to close my eyes and wait.
You’ll learn quickly that I’m pretty impulsive and slightly delusional when I find creativity. I can pull inspiration from pretty unconventional sources, like fire, lava, and redness. It was fire that initially attracted me to the cane workers in Mexico. I remember seeing them burn fields for the first time and feeling like I was in a complete trance. Today, I feel pulled by the lava flowing underneath the volcanoes of El Salvador. But it feels different this time. It feels explosive.
I’ve never had a real relationship with my father which is why I think El Salvador has always felt so foreign to me. But finding home and self has always been a common theme in my work, so I know that it’s time to finally confront what’s been absent for so long. Standing on these volcanic soils feels heavy but I know my ancestors are trying to guide me. I know that they’re trying to broaden my perspective and sharpen my eyes. So I am here to see.
I rarely let people into my creative process because it can be a deeply painful journey for me. There’s no rational thinking and most logical minds struggle with my deep intuition and impulsivity. Letting the wrong people in can be very deflating for my spirit. I’ve decided to be more open about what’s going on in my little mind for my own safety. I’ve sat with a lot of anger and pain lately, a lot of redness, and I know I am here to find a way to channel it, or tame it, I don’t know. Or maybe it’s time to become the volcano.
