It’s World Biodiversity Day (22nd May) and UCL has committed to becoming a Nature Positive University🌳

This means putting nature at the heart of how we operate, teach and research.

We’re taking action by:

• Mapping biodiversity across our campuses
• Understanding our wider environmental impact, including supply chains
• Setting targets to improve biodiversity outcomes
• Creating a biodiversity working group to lead the work

Across UCL, this builds on the Wild UCL campaign – from greener spaces on campus to projects that support habitats and wildlife.

Our researchers are also leading the way globally, developing new ways to measure biodiversity and exploring how universities can reduce their impact on nature.

Want to get involved?
We’re inviting staff and students to express interest in joining a biodiversity working group and help shape what comes next.

• 66% less waste per person compared to 2019
• Record participation in programmes like Green Impact, LEAF and Sustainability Ambassadors
• UCL ranked 1st in the UK and 3rd globally for sustainability

We look forward to welcoming leading climate scientist for her talk 'Why Climate Science is Not Enough' which will focus on the disconnect between climate science and climate action.

A myth persists in much of the climate community: that if we just do more science, or better science, or scarier science, climate action will follow. Yet despite decades of physical science that ever more clearly paints the risks we face if we do not act, the gap between what we know and what we do has not closed in proportion to the evidence. Hayhoe argues that’s because how we decide and why we act depends not as much on the physical sciences as they do on the social and political science of how humans interact with information and make decisions.

Katharine Hayhoe is an atmospheric scientist and a Horn Distinguished Professor and Endowed Chair in Public Policy and Public Law at Texas Tech University. She is also Chief Scientist for The Nature Conservancy.

After her talk, Katharine Hayhoe will be in a Q&A with Dr Simon Chin-Yee, Lecturer in the Department of Political Science.
