Congrats to Savannah for winning #Survivor 49! How does her edit compare to past winners?

🥇 Savannah as a winner
At 29% over-edited, Savannah has the 21st biggest edit of all time. She ranks 3/21 among women (only behind Sarah Lacina and Kim Spradlin). Pre-merge she was 75% over-edited (5/49) and was 7% over-edited post-merge (31/49). Aided by the longer episode runtimes, she came just one confessional short of tying for the second most confessionals all-time among women. Kelly (S1) had 85 and Rachel (S47) had 86.

The only players with bigger pre-merge edits:
• Rob (S22)
• Tony (S28)
• Yam Yam (S44)
• Earl (S14)

Whether intentional or not, Survivor has a consistent record of editing winners differently depending on their gender and race.

♂️♀️Gender
The top 12 biggest winner edits are all men (and 18 of the top 20) while eight of the bottom nine smallest edits are all women (Bob Crowley being the only man). On average, male winners are 44% over-edited while female winners are 1% under-edited. Savannah brings up the average for women from -2.4% to -0.9% and the average for non-white women from -3% to +1%.

Race
On average, white winners are 30% over-edited while POC winners are only 13% over-edited. The top 6 edits of all time are white in addition to 13 of the top 15.

🧮 The Edit Metric
The number of confessionals varies from season to season so to quantify the edit in a more accurate way, I compared the number of confessionals each winner received in their season compared to how many confessionals they would have received if confessionals were distributed evenly amongst every player left in the game each episode. 0% is a perfectly even edit. Anything more means they got more than an equal share.

Confessionals are not a perfect measure but it’s the best data available and it’s the one time we know that players are most likely being honest. Screen time isn’t everything but I think it’s easier to call a winner “deserving” if they are shown on screen more often.

Notes: Gabler is half Arab but I listed his race as white since that’s how the US census defines it. Chris Underwood is Panamanian.

In the 48 hours after the finale (episode 13) of #Survivor 49, the cast gained 41,368 Instagram followers! This is always the biggest week of the season. This finale growth ranks 8/9 in the New Era:
S45: 116,549
S46: 91,840
S48: 75,264
S44: 66,433
S41: 55,975
S47: 54,421
S42: 52,282
➡️ S49: 41,368
S43: 35,028

Savannah gained the most followers! Sophi and Rizo also had very strong growth. In 5/9 New Era seasons, the winner had the most growth after the finale, and four times they had the second most. Leaders that weren’t winners:
S48: Kamilla
S44: Carolyn
S43: Jesse
S41: Xander

📈 Here’s the full list of this week’s growth:
1. Savannah: 12,947 gained (+44%)
2. Sophi: 9,612 gained (+23%)
3. Rizo: 8,250 gained (+51%)
4. Steven: 2,983 gained (+23%)
5. Sophie: 1,465 gained (+20%)
6. MC: 1,151 gained (+8%)
7. Kristina: 1,037 gained (+30%)
8. Sage: 843 gained (+17%)
9. Jawan: 751 gained (+20%)
10. Jeremiah: 717 gained (+19%)
11. Jake: 602 gained (+3%)
12. Alex: 447 gained (+8%)
13. Shannon: 407 gained (+3%)
14. Matt: 61 gained (+11%)
15. Annie: 40 gained (+0.2%)
16. Nicole: 30 gained (+1%)
17. Jason: 25 gained (+3%)
18. Nate: 0 gained (+0%)

The final 5 gained an average of 6,538 followers, the six players who were jurors before the finale averaged 1,133, and the pre-jurors averaged 269.

Sophi was in the top 2 every single week! And was first 9 times.

More context:
I collect follower data every day at 8pm ET (to match the time that the show airs on Wednesdays) but I like sharing the 48 hour growth update because at that point, players have usually gained just over 50% of the followers they will gain for the whole week so it’s a good approximation for the full week.

⚠️Spoilers for the #Survivor 49 finale ahead!⚠️

I created the ‘Edit’ metric (shown in the last column) to compare how many confessionals each player received vs. how many they would have received if confessionals were distributed evenly in each episode. Players in episode 13 should have 64.9 confessionals if they were distributed evenly. Any percentage above 0% means a player was over-edited, and anything below 0% means they were under-edited.

📺 Episode 13 (Finale) Highlights:
• Sophi had the most confessionals (15). This was the third time this season she had the most confessionals.Steven also led 3 times but Savannah led the most (4 times).
• Every player got at least four confessionals.
• Women received 82% of the confessionals (only 2% over-edited).

🔥 Season Highlights
• S49 is the third-best season for giving a player a confessional every episode. Only S47 & S48 did better.
• Savannah had the third most confessionals for a female winner. Kelly (S1) had 85 and Rachel (S47) had 86. Only 10 players had more than Savannah. Russell (S19) holds the all-time record of 108.
• Sophi had the 4th most confessionals among all women who have ever played (79).
• Jake was the most over-edited player of the season. Savannah was second.
• Women had 356 confessionals which is the most in Survivor history. They got 54.6% of the confessionals (5th highest). Still, they were 4.9% under-edited. Only 16 seasons have edited women better. Women have been under-edited in 43/49 seasons. On average, women are under-edited by 10%. In S1, women were over-edited 5.1% (the most ever) while men have been over-edited by up to 33.1% (in HvV).

Credit to Buff on Survivor Sucks for the confessional counts.

Who does Edgic think are the top contenders to win #Survivor 49 after episode 12 heading into the finale?

✨ What is Edgic?
Edgic (short for editing and logic) is a process by which viewers try to quantify and read into the edit to pick the winner. There are many places where people do Edgic but I use data from the Unspoiled Edgicers Unite group on Tapatalk because they are the least prone to spoilers. Participants can choose up to three winner picks, and those picks are weighted so if one person’s votes were visualized in this graph, their 1st pick would be represented with 100%, their 2nd pick with 66% and their 3rd pick with 33%.

🏆 Winner Support After Episode 12:
📈 Savannah: 79% (+23% vs. last week)
📉 Sophi: 36% (-33% vs. last week)
📈 Rizo: 21% (+8% vs. last week)
📉 Sage: 0% (-3% vs. last week)
📊 Kristina: 0% (same as last week)

Sophi was the frontrunner for the entire season until this week when Savannah surged to the top. Savannah has been the #2 contender all season except for week 2 when she tied with Sophi and week 7 when she fell to third behind Sophi and Sage.

This is how much support all New Era winners had heading into the finale (Edgic has been right 7/8 times):
S48 Kyle: 58% (#1 contender)
S47: Rachel 77% ( contender)
S46: Kenzie 81% ( contender)
S45: Dee 79% ( contender)
S44: Yam Yam 82% ( contender)
S43: Gabler 0% (Jesse was, Cassidy )
S42: Maryanne 90% ( contender)
S41: Erika 36% ( contender)

🔢 Ratings:

Tomorrow is the #Survivor 49 finale so I wanted to do deep dive into the Final 5.

Quick bios (imagine Jeff Probst reciting these names like he would at the start of Old School Survivor seasons):
• Sophi Balerdi: 27-year-old Entrepreneur from Miami, FL
• Savannah Louie: 31-year-old Former reporter from Atlanta, GA
• Sage Ahrens-Nichols: 30-year-old Clinical social worker from Olympia, WA
• Rizo Velovic: 25-year-old Tech sales from Yonkers, NY
• Kristina Mills: 35-year-old MBA career coach from Edmond, OK

This post looks at 5 key stats that I think the jury might find interesting:
1. Challenge Wins
2. Individual Challenge Wins
3. Idols Played
4. Votes Received
5. Voted For Boot (to keep it simple, this does not consider revotes or spit votes).

I also made profile cards for the F5 which lists these stats and some demographic data.

🥇With two individual immunity challenge left to go, Savannah has the chance to tie the all-time record for most individual immunity wins and set the all-time record for women. The six players with the most wins:
• Colby Donaldson (S2)
• Tom Westman (S10)
• Terry Deitz (S12)
• Ozzy Lusth (S13)
• Mike Holloway (S30)
• Brad Culpepper (S34)

Women who won 4:
• Kelly Wiglesworth (S1)
• Jenna Morasca (S6)
• Kim Spradlin-Wolfe (S24)
• Chrissy Hofbeck (S35)
• Rachel LaMont (S47)

📿 Kristina is the only remaining player who has played an idol but Rizo has an idol that he can play at the Final 5.

🗳️ In terms of votes received, Sophi and Savannah have the most (4). Sage and Kristina have never been voted for.

🗳️ Lastly, I looked at how often each player voted for the person who went home. No one has a perfect voting record.

Did I miss any key stats? Are you excited for the finale!?
