Ahli fikih bermazhab Syafi’i, Umar bin Ali al-Mishri yang dikenal dengan Ibnu Mulqan (804 H/1402 M), berpendapat di dalam bukunya yang berjudul Thabaqat al-‘Auliya’ tentang biografi Abu al-Hasan asy-Syadzili r.a. Nama Syekh Abu al-Hasan asy-Syadzili adalah Ali bin Abdullah bin Jabbar bin Yusuf Abu al-Hasan al-Hudzali asy-Syadzili adh-Dharir az-Zahid Nazil as-Sakandariyyah. Beliau adalah pendiri tarekat Syadziliyyah. Nasabnya sampai pada al-Hasan bin ‘Ali bin Abi Thalib r.a.
Umar bin Ali al-Mishri menambahkan, “Setelah nama Yusuf di atas, diteruskan dengan bin Yusya ‘bin Bard bin Baththal bin Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Isa bin Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Ali bin Abu Thalib. Abu al-Hasan asy-Syadzili mempunyai kedudukan yang agung. Beliau adalah sahabat asy-Syekh Najm ad-Din bin al-Ashfihani. Salah satu sahabat beliau yang lain adalah asy-Syekh Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi r.a.
Imam Suyuthi (w. 911 H/1550 M) berkata di dalam kitab Husn al-Muhadharah pada pembahasan tentang orang-orang saleh, zuhud, dan sufi yang hidup di Mesir, “Syekh Abu al-Hasan asy-Syadzili adalah Syekh tarekat Syadziliyyah, namanya adalah asy-Syarif Taqiy ad-Din Ali bin Abdullah Abdul Jabbar.”
Ahli sejarah bernama Shalah ad-Din ash-Shafadi di dalam kitabnya Nakt al-Hammiyan, berkata, “Nama lengkap Abu al-Hasan asy-Syadzili adalah Ali bin Abdullah bin Abdul Jabbar bin Yusuf Abu al-Hasan asy-Syadzili (dengan huruf syin ﺵ dan dzal ذ yang diberi titik, di sela kedua huruf tersebut terdapat huruf alif ﺍ dan di akhir kata tersebut adalah huruf lam ﻝ) al-Maghribi az-Zahid Nazil al-Iskandariyyah wa Syekh ath-Thaifah asy-Syadziliyyah, kata syadzilyah adalah nama sebuah daerah di Afrika. Nasab beliau bersambung sampai kepada Ali bin Abu Thalib r.a.
Abu al-Hasan asy-Syadzili adalah seorang tokoh besar, ahli hikmah, dan berada di maqam yang tinggi, serta beliau memiliki keahlian menyusun bait syair (nazm) dan prosa (natsr). Beliau adalah seorang tunanetra, namun sering pergi menjalankan ibadah haji. Beliau wafat di padang pasir Aidzab ketika dalam perjalanan hendak melaksanakan ibadah haji. Beliau di makamkan di sana pada awal bulan Dzul Qa’dah tahun 656
