Let's abolish January

It doesn't half go on and it's rubbish weather.
So a bit of whizz bang colour to brighten things up. One can go on playing with colour variations forever I'm finding.
My favourites in this little lot are the tall jug in the first slide - blues and orange, and the other tall jug in slide three with the black, grey and orange stripes.
Both available on my website and soon going on a virtual outing to the USA with

Okay, it's the next stage.
Plates part two.
Throwing is just the beginning, turning (that's trimming) often takes just as long and is an important stage in the making process.
So, highly edited and sped up, here it is. The first tool that I'm using here is a home made one, made from packing case metal straps, before plastic replaced such things.

Big plates!
Getting stuck into orders, this one involves a surprising amount of muscle. But - it's a nice change and for a client I much enjoy working with who always come up with interesting projects.
I'm also excited to be part of the upcoming usgiftfair.
Just as well there's work to keep one distracted from the shitshow that's politics, though I hope everyone is noticing that Palestine is still being bombed and the untried hunger strikers in the UK are on the verge of dying. Honestly, what is going on?
I'll now just try throwing in a few seconds words to satisfy the algorithm
#reelsinstagram #wheelthrown #tableware
No captions, no music, just a slightly random recent photo of a little group of tableware.
I really like orange and black together.
Supposed to cram in some SEO words too, just not in the mood.
I'll just get on with a huge amount of wedging now...
It's those vases thrown with a stick

Seemed logical, having posted videos of throwing and turning narrow necked vases, to show a few images of finished ones.
It's a shape I've been making for a long time now, the smallest size especially has been popular. Ideal for people like me who don't know where to put a big bunch of flowers, but want to rescue a solitary stem from the garden that would be lost otherwise.
On my website I've recently added a new, different vase collection, just in time to miss Christmas shopping. You could try being really ahead of yourself for Christmas 2026!
After my open workshop, I've spent a bit of time making donations to families in Palestine. For those who don't know her, I'd like to suggest looking at Megan Hall's account, she's got a load of links to crowdfunding campaigns for families who could really use some help.

This was a small vase that I threw as a demonstration during my open workshop last Sunday. I've filmed throwing these vases before, they're a bit unusual in that I need to use a stick, rather than my fingers for quite a lot of the throwing, as they're so small necked.
I realise though, that I've never shown the turning, which is also a bit different than usual as the piece stays stuck to the wooden batt that I've thrown it on.
Normally, pieces get turned (or trimmed) upside down, but that would be damn near impossible with this shape.
After it's finished, I just let it free itself from the batt by slow drying, then just scrape off any unevenness with a metal kidney and sponge.

How to condense hours of thinking, checking your design ideas with your best friend, dismissing all your partner's input, into one rather haphazardly edited video.
To give a bit of context, it's a sequence shown the wrong way round. The preparation isn't thrilling, painting a liquid wax solution onto the rim to create a border and waxing the colours of a circle, which is part of the surface design. I just included those for the dedicated potters who might want to see the whole process.
But I have to confess to enjoying decorating these small plates and being very impatient to see whether they live up to my expectations when they're fired. But blimey, it was slow, and involved washing altogether too many brushes and stirring sticks at the end.

Do they look just a bit Vorticist?

A new technique,

to be honest, these long plates, which actually have an upturned edge at both ends, are still a work in progress.
I've made good progress on the the rolling out and decoration and in sorting out a former which will enable me to make several at once.

But, keeping the curve of the upturned ends the same is proving quite challenging.

Definitely a work in progress, but I really like the design, so will carry on worrying away at the problem and hope I find some solutions...

Any suggestions?

My most watched reel of 2024
I was astonished by the success of this reel earlier this year. It was viewed massively more than any other post I'd done, which was fun for me!
It does also show a style of work that's been popular in galleries this year too. No idea why now, but that's the way of fashion - always a bit of a mystery - at least to me!
I'm pondering what I'm going to start the year off on and what ideas I'd like to explore first...
My aim is to have fun doing it, whatever it is!
Wishing everyone the best possible 2025 xxx
