Β£110k sounds rich in the UK.
On paper, it is.
In London? It depends on how you play the game.
Hereβs the part no one tells you π
Once you cross Β£100k, the UK quietly starts taking things back:
β’ You lose your Β£12,570 tax-free allowance
β’ You lose child benefit (if youβre a citizen/ILR)
β’ Your effective tax rate jumps hard
π‘ Smart move:
Put Β£10k into your pension.
You stay under Β£100k taxable income and protect the tax-free allowance.
Not a hack β just understanding the rules.

My first corporate job.
Β£4,000 annual salary.
Living hand to mouth πΈ
No savings.
An education loan hanging over my head.
More insecurities than confidence.
Living in a city where I never truly felt safe ποΈ
Quitting was not an option β even when it felt overwhelming.
Even when doubt was louder than belief.
I stayed.
I learned.
I grew β slowly, quietly, imperfectly.
Ten years later, the story flipped completely.
Not overnight.
Not by luck.
But by choosing consistency over comfort.
If youβre in your 2016 season β keep going.
Your future self is already thanking you π€

Saving isnβt about not having money β itβs about being intentional with it. Hereβs what Iβm saying no to π
π Salon nails
I still do grooming and root touch-ups, but Β£30β40 every 3 weeks + an hour of my weekend? Hard pass.
βοΈ Business class flights
I can afford it, but I refuse to spend my own money on business class. Premium economy for long haul? Fair. Business? Only if itβs paid for.
π Luxury shopping at full price
Why pay full price when Europe + VAT refunds exist? Iβll wait for sales and shop smarter β designer bags arenβt going anywhere.
π½οΈ Eating & drinking out all the time
Between Instagram and corporate invites, I already eat out plenty in London. My own money stays untouched unless itβs a must-try or a celebration.
β Β£10β15 daily office lunches & coffee
This isnβt just about money β itβs about health. Weekday homemade lunches mean I can splurge guilt-free on weekends.
Rich girl mindset isnβt about spending more β itβs about spending better πΈβ¨

Living on Β£35k π·
Iβve actually lived on this salary back in 2017 β so this isnβt theory, itβs real London survival. Hereβs how you make it workβ¦ and what it teaches you.
Take-home: ~Β£2,300/month
Pension: 5% minimum (optional at this stage β cash flow matters more early on)
First reality check π
On Β£35k, a 1-bed flat is off the table. No sugarcoating.
Welcome to flatshare life.
Flatshare options ποΈ
β«οΈ Double room in a 4β5 bed flat, no living room (just kitchen): Β£900β1,000 (Zones 2/3/4)
β«οΈ Double room in a high-rise with living room & TV: Β£1,300β1,500
β«οΈ Ensuite in a high-rise with amenities: Β£1,600β1,700 (Zones 2/3)
Letβs choose the cheapest option β survival > aesthetics.
Monthly breakdown π§Ύ
π Rent (bills included): Β£900
π₯ Groceries: Β£150 (home-cooked meals only)
π Transport: Β£200
πΈ Going out: Β£150 (yes, you still live a little)
π§ββοΈ Misc: Β£200 (gym, subscriptions, life)
Savings: ~Β£700 πΈ
Not amazing β but realistic.
The bigger lesson π
Β£35k is fine as a starting point, not a destination. You take it to enter the game, learn fast, build skills β but you must be intentional about the next move.
Promotion. Job switch. Pay rise.
This salary should light a fire, not create comfort.

β’ One earner on Β£90k β very doable, lifestyle dependent

π‘ My biggest takeaways:

β Build wealth early
β Use high-yield savings accounts
β Max out your ISA allowance (tax-free)
β Turn rent into a mortgage π‘
London is expensive β but with the right strategy, itβs manageable π

(Also because I am not a morning person)
Itβs funny how it often takes someone who loves usβor someone whoβs been around the block a long timeβto hold up a mirror and say, βHey, look at what youβre actually doing.β Leading teams across countries, being trusted with that responsibility, and doing it well enough that senior leaders notice your communication and connection skillsβthatβs not small at all.
What stands out is that the praise came from two very different places in the same week:
β’ your mom, from a place of pride and perspective, and
β’ a senior leader, from experience and professional judgment.
When those worlds overlap, itβs usually a sign that youβve genuinely grown into something meaningful, even if it feels βnormalβ to you now. And youβre rightβweβre often so focused on the next task, the next flight, the next workshop, that we forget to pause and acknowledge how far weβve come.
If you can, hold onto this moment. On days when impostor syndrome creeps in (because it always does for capable people), this is the evidence you can come back to: Iβm trusted. Iβm effective. Iβm growing.
When I got promoted in 2022 and saw Β£65K on my contract, I genuinely thought, βIβm rich now.β
Spoiler alert: I wasnβt. π
Yes, my take-home increasedβ¦ but so did my lifestyle. I started doing the right things β investing in an ISA and saving for a house deposit β but I also made mistakes.
π Biggest mistake?
My take-home went up by ~Β£600 and I immediately moved into a nicer flat paying Β£1,600+ rent. Totally unnecessary. I also started spending more on branded things I didnβt need. I wasnβt a financially responsible corporate girlie back then β I am now π π½
β¨ Single in London on Β£65K?
Itβs actually a decent salary if youβre intentional.
πΈ Monthly take-home: ~Β£3,600βΒ£3,690
π Typical monthly expenses:
β’ Travel: Β£200
β’ Groceries: Β£150βΒ£200 (ASDA vs Waitrose matters π)
β’ Salon / self-care: Β£70βΒ£80
β’ Eating out: ~Β£200 (donβt overspend here π)
π Scenario 1: Living Alone (Independent Flat)
β’ Rent (incl bills): ~Β£2,200
Total monthly expenses: ~Β£2,860
π° Savings: ~Β£740/month β ~Β£8,800/year
Comfortable, peaceful⦠but slower savings.
βΈ»
π‘ Scenario 2: Flatshare (Zone 2β3)
β’ Rent: ~Β£1,500
Total monthly expenses: ~Β£2,160
π° Savings: ~Β£1,530/month β ~Β£18,300/year
More savings, faster goalsβ¦ but yes, you may deal with interesting flatmates π₯²
π What I did on Β£65K:
β’ Invested Β£50 weekly into a Stocks & Shares ISA
β’ Built a 3-month emergency fund in a Cash ISA
β’ Balanced saving, travel & living life β¨
π¨βπ©βπ§ With kids?
One income on Β£65K in London is tough. Two incomes in a 1-bed flat? Still very doable to save.
Same salary. Two very different financial outcomes.
London will humble you β but discipline changes everything πΈβ¨
