Oiso is a seaside resort town about an hour by train from Tokyo. My great-grandfather and other relatives lived here, and I really wanted to experience the place as they would have - through a local festival.
▫️
The Oiso Sagicho Fire Festival has been celebrated since the Edo Period ). It is recognized as an important folk cultural tradition in Japan. Locals build 9 giant towers, which are set on fire at sunset. By burning them, people symbolically let go of the previous year’s hopes, worries and spiritual residue. They prepare to start the new year clean.

I took these photos on April 4, 2026, when I was in Tokyo for a black-tie, intercollegiate networking event at the Tokyo American Club. I was very fortunate to book the last room at a simple hotel nearby, Rose Stay Tokyo Shiba Park.
▫️
It was raining heavily that Saturday. But after I arrived at the hotel, there was a moment when it wasn’t raining much. I noticed a gorgeous Sakura cherry blossom tree on the other side of the street, next to a pastel blue pedestrian overpass 🩵🌸 I decided to take some photos, and I’m so happy I did!

Before releasing more images from our photo shoot last summer in Yokohama, Japan, we wanted to share this short interview we did. It was very hot, and there was a small tsunami warning in place! We were being told to move away from the water, but we decided to take the chance and capture a quick interview. Please excuse the sound of the wind! Hope you enjoy this special moment to learn more about Orie san, a multi-talented Japanese dancer and performer 💃🏻👘🪭

Last month, I got to visit the Imperial Palace for the first time when they opened Inui Street (750 m road in the inner palace grounds) to the public. It only opens twice a year: Spring (cherry blossom season) & Autumn (fall foliage season).
▫️
It was a very significant moment for me because my father’s father, Shiro Kato, worked here for 30 years as one of Emperor Hirohito’s (reign: 1926–1989) artists. They were biologists, and they went out by boat to find sea slugs and related marine life. My grandfather was responsible for painting the sea slugs.
▫️
I wanted to see where my grandfather worked with the emperor! It was a satisfying first glimpse into the mysterious life of a man I never met.
▫️

Actually, my parents told me that it’s not a bad idea to let Mt Fuji know your heart’s desires because it will grant you your wishes. I can see Fuji-san very well from where I’m staying in the mountains of Atami, Japan.
▫️
This week, my heart is so heavy from the news of the mass shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where I studied. Why is it so hard to choose peace over violence? I am filled with grief for the innocent students and their families who are enduring unimaginable trauma.
▫️
I had been preparing a “simple” autumn series, but the truth is that it’s never simple for anyone at any given moment. With this post, I send you healing vibes and the power to choose peace over violence.

Orie was a joy to work with💕 She arrived for the shoot in a taxi, wearing her kimono, with a huge suitcase full of clothes, fans and small speakers for music.
▫️
I first met Orie at the 2023 traditional Japanese festival in Barcelona. I was shooting photos and videos of the event, but we never even had a single conversation. Life is strange and wonderful - you never know who you’ll meet down the road again❣️
