Records of Katsura’s Farmhouse from last Fall, starting construction this summer.

From the yard where a new art studio will be constructed as part of the outbuildings, to the terrace, overlooking the field, which will be landscaped to tie together external paths, to the Grade II listed farmhouse where most of the work takes place - a full refurbishment including restoration and retrofit using insulated lime render and limecrete flooring to improve thermal comfort and longevity of the building fabric, and a small extension on the 1960s built fourth bay, opening up the house to the outside, as well as a solar array beyond the orchard and vegetable patches.

Congratulations to Unit L Making Housing Public Class of 2026!

A year of abundant creativity, developing radical new micro-cities and districts of play and participation on an existing housing estate in Bow following this year’s brief of UNDER PRESSURE: Utopia Revisited.

The End of Year Show is now open until June 20th with the students’ tectonic and prototypical work from the whole year on display in a handmade exhibition mirroring the adhoc way unit L set up their working areas in and outside of the studio this past year, tools and personal libraries included.
The three projects on show: 1. Bolt on/Float over, 2. Temporary Assembly (for a need, play and planning), and 3. Community Infrastructure (play and participation as catalysts for reimagining existing housing estates).

Well done to the Unit L prize winners: Sam Greetham for The Leslie Jones Prize to a Year 2 student for the best overall performance on the BA (Hons) in Architecture;
Evelina Priedite for The Leslie Jones Memorial Prize for the most progress in building construction BA (Hons) in Architecture by RIBA South; and
Emanuel Iordache for The Design Engine Architects Prize for the best BA (Hons) in Architecture Year 3 physical model made at any scale in any medium.

Onwards.

Thanks to for capturing the opening 📸 and to our guests and tour guides this year

Studio naama are currently part of AiM: MAKING MATTERS — Communicating Architectural Ideas Through Models.

Model making has always been important to us in the studio and for this exhibition we’ve showcased models of Hackney Wick Bungalow which is currently on site. The project is a renovation of a bungalow with a walled garden on a 1960s estate, redistributing the layout to create connected, bright and textural spaces within the existing footprint. New clay block walls are going up imminently as well as metal framed windows and doors and timber floors, panelling and joinery. We’re very happy to be able to share these physically with a wider public.
Thanks to Isaac Lawson and Ella Hannyngton for their work on the models during their time in the studio.

1. Non-Detailed Layout Studies, 1:25, 1x1m
A field of models of both designed and indicative spaces, illustrative of the often explosive exponential nature of options where a conceptual or physical constraint will allow one variation and not another, for example, sectional option ‘A’ can be applied to ‘C’ but not ‘E’.

2. Detailed Entrance Study, 1:25, 150x300mm
The experience of space comes down to the objects and surfaces we touch and how these surfaces capture the daily and seasonal atmospheres that surround us; the sound of a switch, the hum of a light, the movement of a curtain, the feel on our feet.

3. Stacked Materials, 1:1, (not pictured)
A curious ensemble strapped together to remind us of the invisible processes beyond the model and our schematic methodologies; the labour of lifting, fixing, adhering, cutting and joining.

Journeys with Mai
Display cases and seating

The exhibition design constructions sit on pine plywood bases across the gallery creating a low level timber landscape.

Hidden within the larger pine bases are existing museum display cases. A 200mm high band of birch ply surrounds the upper part of the cases, strapped together with white ratchets, providing a softer timber feel at the level visitors might touch.

This language extends to the timber stools designed for the exhibition, with a slotted together pine base and birch seat.

Journeys with (Te tere o) Mai is now open to the public at and we hope people far and wide can get to see it. We have so enjoyed working on this project, getting to know a new place and team of people who put so much care and creativity into every aspect from the first discussions to the very last detail.

The exhibition explores the histories between Europe and the South Pacific in the 1770s stemming from the Portrait of Mai, the first Polynesian person to visit Britain, jointly owned by the and on its last stop before leaving the UK.

Across four gallery spaces, The Box presents a series of immersive experiences that re-examine Reynolds’ Portrait of Mai within the context of Plymouth’s local and global histories, as a primary seaport at the heart of colonial expansion, with a monumental video work by Lisa Reihana, In Pursuit of Venus (infected) and multimedia installation by Mohini Chandra, Expedition into a Volcano.

It’s been great to see visitors interacting with the exhibition over the weekend, sharing their personal stories in relation to the objects and histories and enjoying the whole programme. A heartfelt thank you to whose soundscape accompanies the exhibition transporting us to the sounds of Tahiti during that time, and who led us through an activation ceremony before the opening, recognising and honouring the people depicted in or who penned these works, including Mai and Tupaia, a fellow native of Ra‘iātea.

Thanks to the best team, curator extraordinaire Hannah Hooks, Jodie Bishop, Adam Milford, Tony Davey and everyone in the team at The Box, LG-HM for their beautiful graphic design, for bringing our design to life with so much ingenuity, the great technicians and everyone behind the scenes.

Excerpts from our unit L brief video (minus narration) for Making Housing Public 2025-26: UNDER PRESSURE

This year the studio is focusing on new community interventions in a historically working class residential area, continuting to embrace
methods to empower communities through design and use, openness & generosity for communities to grow, structuralism and restraint as catalyst for aesthetics, and identity and affordability, for economic and environmental sustainability.

Students are exploring how to reimagine this civic and domestic realm drawing on a lost utopian vision to bring people together and create a sense of play, fun and optimism.

The year will culminate in the manifestation of micro-cities of Live-Work-Play that innovatively re-frame our domestic realms, creating rich public and mixed-use environments, including outdoor and indoor spaces for communal and physical activity for youth;
reinstating the glamour, youthfulness and health of the Utopian dream and radically reimagining how housing can allow future generations to prosper.
