This vibrant family home includes a full basement with sunken patio and a new second floor. Despite adding two levels, the home remains flooded with natural light, cascading through large openings and voids in the floorplate, down to the basement.

The challenge was to design three very different flights; basement to ground, ground to first, and first to loft, in ways that reflect the levels they connect but to simultaneously establish a common language (material, aesthetic, detail) so they read as one. Together and apart.
Here are a few shots of the basement flight. Clad entirely in oak - you walk down ‘into’ the stair - surrounded and protected by the material. Compressed, before being released on to the levels above and below.
