◾ In Ahmedabad, Chikoo House by reflects India’s contemporary transformation. The design integrates family history and nature with spatial innovation, emphasizing the relationship between interior and exterior and the continuity between past and future.

"India’s radical transformation in recent years is forecast to soon make the country one of the world’s leading powers. This swift, all-pervasive economic, social, and technological development has also impacted India’s urban, spatial, and housing issues. Designers and architects are therefore key actors in this ongoing process, called upon to design contemporary urban living spaces that balance India’s rich heritage with a legitimate desire to look to the future."

At the Vitra Campus, B.V. Doshi's latest project transforms architecture into spirituality: the Doshi Retreat, completed after his death in 2023, welcomes visitors with sinuous curves in aged steel that lead to a circular room open to the sky, where a mechanical gong releases a continuous flow of sound. At the heart of the work is the idea of travel: inspired by Fehlbaum's travels in India and the Modhera Sun Temple, Doshi's original vision was completed by his granddaughter Khushnu Panthaki Hoof and her husband Sönke Hoof of Studio Sangath, transforming the pavilion into a path of tranquility between nature and meditation

Studio Sangath unveils their pavilion for the Jaquar Pavilion Park ‘The Mangrove Pavilion’ at ADFF:STIR Mumbai 2026!

Standing between land and sea, the Mangrove Pavilion by Studio Sangath draws attention to Mumbai’s quiet guardians. Evoking mangroves as ecological buffers and living thresholds, the pavilion reflects on their rapid decline – inviting reflection on coastal resilience, balance, and the fragile edge between urban urgency and nature’s rhythm.

This pavilion at the Jaquar Pavilion Park is built in partnership with Arun Vadehra & Family.

The Doshi Retreat will be unveiled at the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein tomorrow – a contemplative space designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Balkrishna Doshi in close collaboration with his granddaughter Khushnu Panthaki Hoof and Sönke Hoof. Inspired by Indian spirituality, it offers a sensory journey of silence, sound and serenity. #VitraCampus #DoshiRetreat #BalkrishnaDoshi

Stillness. Contemplation. Memory. Ritual. Movement: These were among the many words that our beloved architect, the late #BVDoshi had scribbled on a paper, along with an artistic sketch of a place that was part building, part landscape and part ‘journey’, and passed it to Khushnu Panthaki Hoof, his granddaughter and principal at Ahmedabad-based Studio Sangath. This was in 2020. Over months of being homebound during the pandemic, the Pritzker Prize-winning architect, in company of Khushnu and Sönke Hoof —also principal at Studio Sangath—imagined this place as a sanctuary. It was in response to an invitation from Rolf Fehlbaum, chairman emeritus of Vitra, to design “a shrine” for the Vitra Campus in Weil Am Rhein, Germany.

Fehlbaum, who has been a regular to India since the late ’70s, visited the Modhera Sun Temple in Gujarat in 2019. Inspired by it, he wrote to Doshi, asking if he could re-create “that spirit” he had felt at the temple, and to bring it to the campus in Germany. Doshi passed away in January of 2023, but that artistic drawing, and the story-telling around it became the point of departure for Khushnu and Sönke, who, in the following years, designed the Doshi Retreat as we see it today at the Vitra Campus. Now it is in august company—next to Tadao Ando’s Conference Pavilion and across the Vitra Design Museum by Frank Gehry. Walking its path, offers a moment of stillness in a world where our minds are in a constant spin.

Ahead of the opening of the Doshi Retreat on the 25th of October, we are thrilled to present AD’s Nov-Dec issue–on stands next week.
