Our Sashiko jacket is featured in the JR East Shinkansen on-board magazine trainvert (December issue).

If you’re on the Shinkansen this month (until the end of December), you can find it in the seat pocket in front of you.

This piece is an upcycled UNIQLO denim jacket with Sashiko, which we created about four years ago.
I’m truly honoured to have this opportunity and very happy to be able to contribute, even in a small way, to Japanese culture.

Thank you so much,, for taking the Shinkansen just to film this clip😅

Wishing you all a happy new year

こぎん刺しKogin-Zashi (Sashiko) is a traditional Japanese embroidery technique born of necessity in the Tsugaru region during the Edo period (1603–1868), when local farmers were prohibited from wearing expensive cotton garments. To survive the bitter northern winters, they layered multiple hemp kimonos for warmth. Resourceful rural women then began reinforcing and insulating these stacked hemp fabrics by stitching them with white cotton thread, creating a resilient, quilt-like material.

What sets Kogin apart is its distinctive geometric beauty. Artisans work on indigo-dyed hemp cloth, counting an odd number of weft threads against the vertical warp and hand-stitching precise patterns of diamonds, crosses, and lattice motifs in white cotton. These repeating, symmetrical designs not only strengthen the fabric but also imbue it with a simple elegance—a functional art form that embodies the creativity and perseverance of women who lived in one of Japan’s coldest regions.

UNIQLO and Studio Masachuka present “Kogin (Sashiko): The Art of Japanese Reinforcement and Repair Stitching”, an exhibition highlighting centuries-old Japanese kimonos and the traditional embroidery technique originally used to reinforce them.

Among its regional adaptations is Tsugaru Kogin, which emerged in Aomori’s Tsugaru region during the Edo period, when farmers were only permitted to wear hemp kimonos. To endure the region’s harsh and lengthy winters, they began applying Sashiko stitches with cotton thread on hemp fabric for added warmth and reinforcement, eventually giving rise to what is now known as Tsugaru Kogin embroidery. Recently, Sashiko has attracted renewed interest for its sustainable focus on mending and reusing textiles, aligning with contemporary values of slow fashion and resource conservation.

This event is held in collaboration with, a bimonthly lifestyle magazine named after the Japanese words for ‘joy’ (楽) and ‘living’ (暮). Rakra has documented everyday life in Northeastern Tohoku through more than 100 issues, preserving local traditions and insights.

Also participating is Maiko Ishita of who inherited cherished Kogin kimonos from her grandmother, Akiko Ishita, and combines traditional craftsmanship with modern approaches to ensure these techniques reach future generations.
Ishita’s precious collection is on display alongside historical and modern examples of Tsugaru Kogin, complemented by interactive demonstrations that illustrate how a practice born of necessity continues to inspire creativity and cultural pride.

Photographs of Tsugaru’s landscape and its people are also exhibited, offering deeper context into the region and culture that shaped this enduring craft.

Stories Untold: Power of Craftsmanship

Travelling through Japan to meet the artisans who create tools and materials used in garment creation, delving into the history of these everyday tools and sharing the stories of their makers through on-site footage. Traditional craftsmanship faces challenges such as declining demand, rising raw material costs and a shortage of successors.
Through video footage we`d like to show you these rarely-seen workspaces, share the processes behind these tools/items and the stories of their makers.
I hope to inspire more people to rediscover the power of craftsmanship, feel the passion of the creators, and see their everyday tools as something more special.

We will introduce various artisans from now. Please keep an eye on this project at 😊

Sashiko fitting room curtains for UNIQLO Sweden! Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity to celebrate the opening of RE.UNIQLO Studio in King's Garden, Stockholm.

These curtains are hand-crafted from vintage kimono fabrics I found in Japan, along with hand-dyed and degraded fabrics we created in Belgium. With a total size of 7.8m long x 2.2m high, they are truly impressive! We meticulously patched all the materials together and applied hand and machine Sashiko stitching all over. Additionally, all the linings are Shibori tie-dyed by us.

In addition to the curtains, we have also created Sashiko-inspired upcycled items for this event.

UNIQLO Stockholm's King's Garden store offers repair services for your beloved UNIQLO items, along with customisation by embroidery machine and, of course, Sashiko services as well, provided by the amazing RE.UNIQLO Studio team.
