The “new home smell” people love?
It’s usually VOCs, synthetic fragrance and chemical off-gassing.

We’ve been conditioned to associate strong smells with “clean”, “fresh” and “luxury”, but the healthiest homes often smell like almost nothing at all.

The materials inside our homes matter more than most people realise.
Most people never connect their environment to how they feel physically.

That’s what led us to develop the Studio Mae Home Wellness Matrix - the internal framework we use to benchmark every design decision throughout a project.

From spatial flow and materiality to circadian lighting, air quality and visual noise, every element is assessed for how it supports the experience of living in the home long term.

Because a home can look perfect and still work against your nervous system.

Curious what your home would score?

DM us for the Wellness Scorecard.
Everyone’s talking about ditching nail polish right now, and while we completely understand the desire to reduce toxic load in our everyday lives, we do find it frustrating how much attention gets placed on the smallest exposures while some of the biggest ones inside the home are still largely ignored.

Because if we’re talking about what your body is exposed to consistently, your mattress is probably one of the first things worth looking at.

We spend roughly a third of our lives sleeping, with our bodies in direct contact with the materials we lie on every single night, our faces only centimetres away, breathing it all in during the one part of the day where our nervous system is supposed to be recovering and regulating.

And yet many conventional mattresses are still made with polyurethane foams, synthetic adhesives, chemical flame retardants and other materials known to off-gas VOCs into the indoor environment, particularly when new.

This isn’t about creating fear around every object in your home, but we do think there’s value in becoming more intentional about the spaces that influence our wellbeing most, especially the ones we spend the most time in.

Your bedroom should be one of the few places that genuinely supports recovery.
Not just aesthetically, but physiologically too.

With care,
Liz & Mima
You're already investing in your health.
- Wellness retreats
- Private testing
- Tailored advice and protocols

But the space you live in everyday, the space that is meant to be your recharge sanctuary - has not been designed and set up to support any of it.

8 years ago when we both left the London architecture firm, we started Studio Mae with a single focus of designing for wellbeing. It was dismissed as too niche and too 'woowoo'.

Now, it is great to see that it is where everything is heading.

Our clients realise that their environment is not neutral but rather it is either; supporting how they sleep, recover and function or it is detracting from their health.

We design homes the way wellness retreats are designed;
- Considered materials
- Bio dynamic lighting
- Reduced visual noise
- Chi
- Neuro science

And we measure all of this through our in-house matrix so nothing is left to chance.

Because a beautiful home isn't enough, it needs to function properly, to allow your system to switch off.

This has never been a trend for us
It’s the standard we’ve always worked to.

We see this all the time. Clients who are trying to do the right thing by investing in high quality pieces and told by the sales assistant that "they'll work together". It looks good in the showroom, but when it arrives in their room, it doesn't feel thoughtfully resolved.

This is what we call Showroom Syndrome.

It's what happens when money goes into pieces instead of into the design of a space as a whole.

Because a beautifully designed home isn't about buying more or spending more, it's about knowing what actually works together.... and it's never a matching set.

This is exactly what we fix for our clients.
It's the little details that shape the feeling of a space most deeply.

✨A curve that feels effortless.
✨A handle that sits perfectly in the hand.
✨A material junction resolved with care.
✨A finish that catches the light subtly rather than shouting for attention.

These are rarely the loudest elements in a room.
But they are often the ones that make it feel considered.

For us, good design is never only about the overall aesthetic picture. It is also about how a person experiences the space up close, every day.

Because when the details are resolved properly,
The whole room feels balanced and calmer.
Starting with a builder often feels like the logical first step, but without a clear design in place, the process can quickly become fragmented.

You may find:
🌱 Pricing varies significantly between quotes
🌱 Decisions are made under time pressure
🌱 And outcomes are shaped by constraints rather than intention

A builder is there to execute, but it’s the design that defines:
🌱 How the space functions
🌱 How it feels to live in
🌱 And how cohesive the final result becomes

When design is resolved early, it creates clarity across the entire project.
It allows every decision to build on the next, rather than working against it.

If you're at the early stages of a renovation,
This is often where the biggest difference is made.
People tend to think kitchens and bathrooms are simple.

Perhaps because it's one contained space.. How hard can it be?

But they’re the spaces where everything collides.

Structure, services, joinery, appliances. Waterproofing.
It all has to land in the same place, and it rarely lines up neatly on its own.

And then it shows up in the details.

A tap that’s just slightly off the centre of a tile.
A stone edge that doesn’t quite know how to meet the wall.
A cabinet door that technically fits… but doesn't align.

It’s small, but it’s not at the same time.

Because none of those details sit in isolation. One move affects the next. Then another.

And if it hasn’t been worked through early, it usually gets pushed down the line.

"Let's figure it out later on site"

By that point, most of it is already locked in.
So the fixes aren’t really fixes.
They’re adjustments, sometimes cover-ups and definitely variations.

When all of these little details are resolved early, things just sit where they should.

The space and design feels effortless, not because it was easy.
Just because it was decided at the right time.
A few pieces that have caught our eye recently; objects that bring quiet, refined beauty and exquisite craftsmanship into a home.

We’re particularly drawn to pieces that feel timeless and add character, texture and story to a space.

Currently inspiring us:
- The Ceramic Pull by Byron & Gomez. This small detail instantly elevates cabinetry with its sculptural, handmade feel.
- A 1960 Scandinavian solifleur vase in clear glass. It’s incredibly delicate and unique.

Often it’s the smallest details — a handle, a vase, a unique piece of stone or textile — that quietly define the feeling of a space.
