🦌TOP FIVES OF 2025🦌

The final instalment in our personal top-fives is here! Which five books did Emily choose as her Books of the Year?

‘2025 has been such a good year of reading for me! I could easily have chosen another 5 favourites, but in an effort to stick to the strict criteria enforced by ourselves, these are the books from this year that I keep coming back to, and that I’ve been recommending in the shop over and over again. I don’t think that there’s a particular common thread linking these five, but intense relationships, a yearning for the open road, and solitude are themes that tend to re-occur. I’m not sure whether to dwell too deeply on why I’m drawn to these themes, but these are my wholehearted recommendations for this year!’

🐻Bear and Bird: The Secret and Other Stories, by Jarvis
📽The Silver Book, by Olivia Laing
😘Big Kiss, Bye-Bye, by Claire-Louise Bennett
🚌Greyhound, by Joanna Pocock
🛳Money To Burn, by Asta Olivia Nordenhof (trans. Caroline Waight)

Remember to check the whole list at or in our bio link, and then tell the relevant bookseller which book you loved the most! It’ll make their day!
🦌TOP FIVES OF 2025🦌

Time for Dan’s five favourite books of the year, pictured here delicately balanced upon the very bonce that greedily ingested them...

‘The most obvious binding themes of my top five books of 2025 seem to be: inconsistent parenting, missing children, and disasters both emotional and environmental. Merry Christmas, everyone! It was an unusually jostle-heavy process to finalise my faves, so I’ll quickly mention a few that, if the wind were blowing slightly differently, may well have made the list: All Consuming by Ruby Tandoh, Failed Summer Vacation by Heuijung Hur (trans. Paige Aniyah Morris), TonyInterrruptor by Nicola Barker, Flower by Ed Atkins, The Wax Child by Olga Ravn (trans. Martin Aitken), Hunchback by Saou Ichikawa (trans. Polly Barton), Crapalachia by Scott McClanahan... I need a top 20 next year.’

Dan’s Top Five (in no particular order):
🏠Mr Outside, by Caleb Klaces
📊The Expansion Project, by Ben Pester
☢️You Glow In The Dark, by Liliana Colanzi (trans. Chris Andrews)
👨‍🏫The Boyhood of Cain, by Michael Amherst
⛰The Night Trembles, by Nadia Terranova (trans. Ann Goldstein)

YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS:

This Saturday (20th) is the busiest day of the year for us, and as usual we're going to be giving 15% of our total takings to charity: we'll be splitting it between our local food bank at St Paul's Church in Southville and The Sameer Project, who are helping vulnerable and displaced Palestinian people in Gaza with a variety of projects across the region (tents, food, medical support etc).

We hope you're able to come down to the shop and get the books you need, but if not then it's worth remembering that this applies to our online shop too: everything we have in stock is available to purchase at, where you'll also find subscription gifts and vouchers too. It all helps!

A note on subscriptions: we're not going to run out, so if you want to save up your purchase for Saturday to get your donation in then we can comfortably accommodate your plans 📚

SEE YOU THERE, GONNA BE WILD

🦌TOP FIVES OF 2025🦌

It’s literally a Holly Jolly Christmas scene here in the bookshop, as we delve into Holly’s personal top five Books of the Year...

‘For me, this list is relatively unsurprising. It features some of my all time favourite authors: Irene Sola, Olivia Laing, Olga Tokarczuk, and Olga Ravn (is the name Olga divinely linked with a literary aptitude? I think so). It features all the essentials to a joyful life: witchcraft, remote rural villages, interior monologues, and emotional intensity. You could say I’m safely in my comfort zone, and I’m quite happy with that.’

Holly’s Top Five (in no particular order):
🌓House of Day, House of Night, by Olga Tokarczuk (trans. Antonia Lloyd-Jones)
📽️The Silver Book, by Olivia Laing
💭Dreaming of Dead People, Rosalind Belben
🧙The Wax Child, by Olga Ravn (trans. Martin Aitken)
🐺I Gave you Eyes and you Looked Toward Darkness, by Irene Sola trans. Mara Faye Lethem)

Remember to check the whole list at or in our bio link, and then tell the relevant bookseller which book you loved the most! It’ll make their day!
It's an extra-special late-night shopping this Thursday: not only will all your North Street favourites be open until 8pm so that you can do your Christmas shopping after work, we'll also be joined by the amazing Factory Singers!

The choir will be regaling us with festive bangers from 6pm and then working their way up North Street, stopping to belt out the hits in the following hostelries/emporia:

🍺The Steam Crane
🍷Kask
🍫Zara's Chocolates
💐Ivory Flowers
🎁Mon Pote
📚Storysmith

And you can expect the usual array of boozy/pastry-y encouragement as you wend your way down the road, making increasingly esoteric purchases along the way (we hope).

It's gonna a perfectly festive night with your beloved local independents, see you there!

Time for another Bookseller’s Top Five of 2025! It’s Callum, sliding into view with his stack on full display. Let’s see what he has to say...

‘And just like that, another year gone by–I hardly noticed because I had my nose firmly stuffed between the pages of some of the best books that English language has to offer! Alongside the 11 books (and 1 film) I read for my book club (shoutout to Clear by Carys Davies, our communal favourite book club book), I managed to sneak in several dozen 2025 offerings.

Fair: The Life Art of Translation by Jen Calleja tops my list as my personal book of 2025. It’s bold, inventive and most importantly an extremely entertaining and enjoyable reading experience from a ridiculously talented polymath. The other books that made my top five published (or reprinted) this year include Deep House: The Gayest Love Story Ever Told by Jeremy Atherton Lin (who we had the pleasure of hosting in the shop earlier in the year!), A State of Siege by Janet Frame, Aerth by Deborah Tomkins, and We Do Not Part by Han Kang (translated by e. yaewon & Paige Aniyah Morris).

Special mention goes to Swimming Studies by Leanne Shapton which is one of my favourite books ever but which I read ten years ago, but was republished lovingly by Daunt Books this year. Luckily, it’s on Tasha’s list. Wahoo!’

Callum’s Top Five (in no particular order):

🦌TOP FIVES OF 2025🦌

We announced our Books of the Year earlier this week, and as promised it’s time for the first of our individual bookseller top-fives! Tasha’s up first...

‘My reading picks for this year have leaned towards the international - no doubt inspired by our festival earlier in the year - and I feel so lucky to have read some incredible works of translated fiction! In fact, two of my favourites were shortlisted for the International Booker prize, proving that I’m someone with my finger on the pulse - or perhaps just a literary glory hunter?’

Tasha’s Top Five (in no particular order):
🐆 A Leopard-Skin Hat by Anne Serre (trans. Mark Hutchinson)
✅ Perfection, by Vincenzo Latronico (trans. Sophie Hughes)
⏰ On the Clock, by Claire Baglin (trans. Jordan Stump)
🏊‍♀️ Swimming Studies, by Leanne Shapton
