For eight years, Dark Lord lived in my head as a benchmark, something reserved for the masters. I remember watching climb it in 2018: ceilings, steep, detached, thin ice. Back then, I truly believed I’d never lead anything like that.

The day didn’t start with Zen-like focus. It started with a dead campervan battery that kept me up half the night. A call with changed the tone, he helped me find a place to stay so I didn’t have to turn back to Canada, and casually dropped the Direct Start beta: straight out of the cave, no cheating left. Having the man who wrote the guidebook tell you how to climb the pitch adds weight to the rack.

I’d scoped the route with a drone the day before, but standing at the base was something else. The pillar was stunning and intimidating. That untouched direct start out of the cave looked like one hell of a warm-up. The lead took over an hour, total war. Thanks,, for the patience.

I’m still not sure whether I won the fight, or if the route did. Dark Lord took its tax in blood and gear: blunted picks, battered hands, a broken toe welt, and a destroyed big toenail.

Near the top, I melted. Runout on a stubby screw, I was hanging on my tools by my wrists, closer than ever to my first ice climbing fall.

After the ascent, you’d think the day was done. But the Adirondacks had one more pitch. Exhausted, still buzzing, I rolled through a stop sign. A New York State Trooper made sure the day ended with a citation.

Some climbs aren’t just a challenge, but a thread running through time.

In the Laurentians, I tried this short, very physical route maybe seven or eight years ago. At the time, it was impossible for me, I didn’t have the strength, technique, or experience.

Over the years, my trips to Val-David gave me the opportunity to return from time to time. And so, the route became a way to measure my progress, both physically and mentally.

This summer, I managed to complete the sequence, and in rather impeccable style. But more than the success, it was the progress that made an impression on me. Like putting together a puzzle piece by piece, it’s really the complexity of the challenge that attracts me.

It made me realize that what I really love is the work of putting things together, finding the logic and moving forward little by little.

After sending Hypotenuse, I didn’t take a break and went straight back to my list of nemesis climbs from past seasons with one goal: tick them all.
It’s been going well — a few big ones already done — so I decided to reward myself with some cliff exploration for something that would really push me.
That’s when Moss Cliff came into the picture, recommended by. And wow
 it delivers.
The right side of the wall hosts a collection of old A3 aid lines, now freed thanks to the incredibly productive work of. The bolts are relics from the original aid climbing in the 80s, but surprisingly solid, with just enough protection to keep things reasonable. Forty-meter pitches of pure endurance — some taking over an hour for attempts. The climbing itself is a mix of discontinuous cracks and delicate face sequences.
Getting there is an adventure in itself: first, a tyrolean crossing over the river, then a steep 30-minute hill approach that leaves your legs burning before you even touch rock.
My shot for this post shows the full scale of Moss — you can clearly see the blunt arĂȘte in the middle dividing the Free Wall from the Aid Wall.
It’s wild, intimidating, and exactly what I was looking for.
The climbing is incredible, but the real challenge for me isn’t the difficulty — it’s the exposure. I’ve dealt with that fear before, and I know it fades with mileage. Looks like Moss will give me plenty of that.

"Some climbs leave a lasting impression and HypotĂ©nuse in Val-David, is one of those lines: striking, technical, all-gear and intimidating. I first tried it in 2017 and only sent it in 2025 after a scattered journey. The climb begins with an intricate heel-toe cam part of a short & powerful boulder problem and continues through sustained 5.12+ terrain, with tough gear. It’s short but refined, a line that demanded years of learning to understand. I’m so grateful to have danced with it."

Lessons from the mountain — with

Sometimes, you only learn from the mountain after leaving it.

Last year, climbing ambassador visited Joshua Tree. Where he found the therapeutic silence of the Mojave Desert.

The desert is a special place for many outdoor’s enthusiasts. A place where life slows down, where everything seems frozen in place.
But sometimes, you only realize how at peace the desert makes you once you are back in the city core again. Where you find the constant noise and fact pace of life again.

Often, the lesson isn’t a hard skill, but rather a gentle reminder once you’re back: enjoy the moment fully before it’s too late.

#choss

At first, I wasn’t going to do the Enduro. Too much pressure, plus my only day at Pont-Rouge in December was rough—a handful of lead falls and feeling totally out of sync with the style. Then I missed the registration deadline, so I figured that was that.
But after a few days of ice and mixed climbing in New York and the Laurentians, the psyche came creeping back. I told myself: this is the perfect excuse to train and get into my best shape on tools. So, I called up Dany, hoping for a miracle. The only way in? Someone had to drop out.
A few days later, he called me back—it was on. I had a spot. No more plastic, no more excuses. Time to get to work.
Six days in Pont-Rouge, dialing in the style, shaking off the rust, and pushing through the competition nerves. But more than anything, reconnecting with people I hadn’t seen in years made it all worth it. Huge thanks to,,, and for making this prep so damn fun.

Chasing the perfection of Cobra Crack.

I’m not sure I should even be sharing this—it might end up adding more pressure—but I feel so proud of my progression.

The climb has been on my mind since I started climbing, ever since I watched the film with climbing on it. 2021 was the year I finally got to try it. It was exciting as I could do all the moves. But clearly, I had no chance of linking any of them, and the setup for the classic mono was a particular nightmare for me.

The following summer was a write-off. A battle with relentless insomnia kept me grounded. I made it to the Cirque of the Uncrackable maybe once or twice, but progress? None.

Then came 2023. I reprojected the whole climb, ditched the classic mono (still haunted by it), and discovered my own beta. For the first time, sending felt possible. But the rain came early, cutting my season short before I could fully test my sequence on the sharp end.

Over the winter, I trained with purpose. I knew that just a little more strength might tip the scales. By spring, I felt stronger than ever and was psyched to get back to Squamish. But life had other plans. Somehow, I injured my shoulder driving to Squamish (seriously, WTF). That injury cost me nearly two months of recovery and rebuilding before I could give Cobra a proper go.

By fall, I was fully back on Cobra, getting past the infamous inversion sequence on most attempts. But the final compression sequence refused to give in. Desperation set in as the monsoon loomed closer. I threw myself at alternative beta, trying anything to unlock something that would make those last moves more manageable.

No redpoint this fall. Apparently, there’s still more to learn. I’m not done with Cobra yet—I’ll be back, sharper than ever.
