Me? I’m going out till 3am with the aunties and returning with no voice.
Postpartum depression hit me like a brick wall. I never saw it coming, and I felt immense amounts of shame and guilt when it was happening. Was I just not meant to be a mother? How could the moment I’ve dreamed of my whole life be so far from reality? How in the world am I going to survive a lifetime that is THIS hard? People kept saying “it doesn’t get easier, you just adapt to it”.
If you’re reading this and are in the trenches, I need you to know that your life will look DRASTICALLY different in a very short period of time. The days are long but the weeks, months, years do pass fast. Stages come and go. And right now, you’re in a very tough stage. But it WILL pass. This is not forever.
Postpartum depression is SO common. But it doesn’t mean it’s normal. I waited too long to seek help because I knew how common it was to experience these things, so I assumed I just had to ride it out. But that’s not true. There’s A-LOT you can do to help move through this season. Everybody is different and will have different tools in their toolbox that work, but here are the things that helped me in my journey:
1) SSRIs - saved me and I took them for approx 6 months then was able to wean off. They truly took the weight off my chest and allowed me to breathe and be able to move to the items below.
2) Therapy. Specifically EMDR. Changed my life. In many aspects. If you’re Calgary local I have the most incredible psychologist who specializes in postpartum/motherhood. I have about 6 friends who see her now and shes the GOAT. we ❤️ you. Traumatic births h8 to see you comin.
3) Exercise. Postpartum I truly learnt the power of exercise for my mental health. Not in a way to punish myself, or change my body. But to lean into clearing my mind and proving to myself I can do hard things. The key is making it something you ENJOY doing. This ain’t a punishment. It’s you time.

Huge thank you to everyone who came out for Christmas Minis this year. You showed up with a can do attitude, the cutest kids, a few light domestics in the car beforehand (no one said it, but I can tell hahahaha) and you trusted me anyway.
