One of the largest male spider crabs I have ever seen. This spring there have been so many of these amazing crabs around, including some immense males, often mate guarding the females. So nice to see, as numbers have definitely been down the previous few years and I wondered if seeing really big males was becoming rare. Spider crabs can be feisty but this one really didn’t care much - almost as if he knew his size alone was imposing enough. Film footage of him to follow soon.

In spring, it’s not just the animals underwater that burst into life, the seaweed does too. That includes my favourite of all our beautiful seaweed species, the rainbow wrack, with its bright blue and green iridescent colours. Out of water it looks drab, but when submerged it becomes like nothing else - hence its other name, magic seaweed.

As you can hopefully see, I’m passionate about wildlife and underwater photography in particular (you can see some land photos here: ). That’s alongside showing the incredible variety of wildlife we get where I live in Cornwall, and around the world. I really hope that if people know how magical the natural world is they are more likely to want to protect it.
I’ve loved photography much of my life but really started underwater photography about 5 years ago. First with just an old GoPro, then a compact camera set up, and now my OM (Olympus) OM1 MII. But I really enjoy the challenge of trying different set ups and lately have been having fun seeing what’s possible with a modern smartphone.
So here’s a few of my personal favourite photos. I’m going to post a bit more specifically about types of wildlife we get here and what you can find over the coming weeks.
