Way back in 2023, I took on a secret commission for my lovely friend - she wanted a tiny tapir painting on the box that would contain the ring she was proposing to my other amazing friend with ❤️
Honestly - *the pressure*!! You only really get one shot with painting directly on a ring box, so after a digital mockup, it was go time!
And then *keeping it a secret* from Connor was the other half of the challenge …. Anyway! It all went smoothly, and was one of the most magical, emotional things I’ve ever witnessed 🫶🏻

There’s something about aquariums that infants seem to particularly love, well before they’re old enough to understand how rare and special it is to be able to observe animals from a totally alien habitat so easily.
Frankly, she couldn’t care less about exotic zoo animals (although did get very excited by a flock of seagulls one time) and she’s shown a much stronger affinity for plants (because she’s my pride & joy of course), but she was completely transfixed by the sea life at 🐟
Clown fish and Saulosi cichlids were particular favourites, while coming face-to-face with a lobster clacking its claws caused quite a bit of alarm… we’ll work on that one.

Well, fret not! I have felt that way too, and here is the most valuable takeaway (trust me!):
✨ Be Prepared for Opportunity ✨
It is impossible to manage chance, and it’s unrealistic to try to construct a flawless career path of steps you are supposed to take, but it is possible to place yourself in the right position when that golden opportunity arrives.
I’ve been working in the wildlife conservation space and communicating science to the masses for quite some time now. From research expeditions to wet tropical forests in places like Australia or Borneo and presenting at zoos to now performing in live science shows, it has been a crazy journey that I never could have pictured.
Here’s what I’ve picked up:
Even though you can’t rely on luck to make your dream career, it is possible to enhance yourself and your skillset so that when good fortune arrives, you can make the most of it.
For example, I used to HATE public speaking, but I didn’t give up. I found ways to improve and now I present at events, host a podcast, and even performing science comedy! I always strive to be as prepared as possible for when new doors might open up.
The important point of all this, is that you should continue doing what you enjoy as well as improve your abilities. If your path seems a little unclear, don’t panic – just focus inward, and good things will come. 🌱✨
