È la festa più importante della città, dedicata a Maria Santissima della Bruna, patrona di Matera, e ogni anno trasforma il 2 luglio in una giornata lunghissima, che inizia all’alba e finisce a notte fonda.
Si parte con la Processione dei Pastori, uno dei momenti più antichi e popolari della festa. Poi, durante la giornata, arrivano le celebrazioni, la Cavalcata, la folla per le strade, i cavalieri, la musica, i fuochi e soprattutto lui: il Carro Trionfale.
Il carro è una gigantesca opera in cartapesta, costruita ogni anno da zero, con uno stile barocco pieno di dettagli, statue, angeli e decorazioni. La cosa incredibile è che viene realizzato per mesi sapendo già quale sarà il suo destino: essere distrutto.
La sera, dopo la processione, il carro arriva in Piazza Duomo per i tradizionali Tre Giri. Poi la statua della Madonna viene messa al sicuro e il carro prosegue verso Piazza Vittorio Veneto, dove avviene lo “strazzo”: l’assalto finale.
La folla lo prende d’assalto per portarne via un pezzo, come ricordo e simbolo di protezione. Un rito che a vederlo da fuori sembra quasi incomprensibile, ma che per Matera è parte dell’identità della città.
E la cosa più interessante è che non è una tradizione rimasta ferma al passato.
Oggi ci sono tantissimi giovani coinvolti, è nata un’app per seguire il carro in tempo reale e avere informazioni sulla festa, esiste perfino il FantaBruna. E poi ci sono gli Angeli del Carro, un gruppo nato per proteggerlo dagli assalti anticipati e farlo arrivare integro fino al momento finale.
Perché la Festa della Bruna è proprio questo: devozione, caos, protezione, appartenenza.
Una tradizione antichissima che continua a vivere perché ogni generazione trova un modo nuovo per sentirla sua.
