The making of the latest addition to #SBFAMurals ✨

A bouquet of florals and pixies, painted for Forage Ojai and Pixies General Store, but really, painted for Ojai itself 🌱

The mural serves as both a visual representation of the businesses that commissioned it and a reflection of the spirit of the valley. Both elements speak to the region’s natural beauty, rich agricultural landscape, and community identity.

This one was a long time coming. Talks began back in September 2025, design was locked in by December, and what followed was a four-month juried approval process through the and its Public Art Commission — including an in-person review at the mural site.

I’ll be honest: I went into this naively thinking I’d be on-site painting by January, but experiencing the level of care, conversation, and consideration that goes into shaping the community visually made the entire experience even more meaningful and rewarding.

The amount of positive feedback and encouragement I received from the community while painting the mural last week was genuinely overwhelming in the best of ways.

Thank you, Ojai - it’s been such an honor to leave my mark on your already beautiful city, and I’m counting down the days until my return🍊

P.S. an extra thanks to for accompanying me for the first couple of days and to for connecting me with the most wonderful new clients!
After spending Mother’s Day weekend working in the gallery and starting on the installation of my latest mural, a little belated self-care at was 100% necessary.

I returned this afternoon for a brow threading and a facial with dermaplaning (it was my first time trying this and I am already obsessed).

As much as I love living in maximalism creatively, I’ve realized the greatest luxury in my personal routine is simplicity, and great skin is the foundation of our personal canvas.

I’m grateful for the women at Brazilia who I’ve trusted for years and who appreciate my high maintenance about being low-maintenance.

Finally sharing pics of the SBFA Gallery’s recent refresh!

If you haven’t stopped in lately, the gallery got a facelift- it was deep cleaned, re-curated, and reoriented to make space for new work and new energy, and highlights moments from each of my most recent collections.

Big thanks to for capturing my happy place in all its glory.

Come visit me soon! and/or schedule a complimentary small group champagne reception- I have a few openings left this summer ✨

I’m incredibly humbled and delighted to have my work featured in a 4-page spread in the official Women United Art Magazine following my selection as a Finalist for the 2025 Women United International Art Prize.

This awards celebrates and elevates women artists at a time when women remain dramatically underrepresented in galleries, museum collections, and major art awards worldwide.

As someone who has built much of SBFA’s identity around championing women in the arts, creative entrepreneurship, and community, it feels incredibly special to have my work included among such an extraordinary group of contemporary female artists around the world.

Thank you to the Women United Art Movement and jury for the feature and recognition- and to my muses featured in this collection!

Where the Moon Wanders, 40” x 30”, acrylic and mixed media on canvas- my most recent commissioned painting✨

This piece was a bit of a departure for me, which is one of the reasons I love commissioned work. It invites me to experiment, explore, and expand my process and materiality in new ways.

My self-proclaimed “night owl” client envisioned a richly textured, gem-toned abstract landscape with silver accents — something that referenced both nighttime and light.

I layered multiple silver tones throughout the piece: a warm luminous silver alongside a deeper pewter tone, allowing them to interact with the shifting colors and values across the canvas.

After I delivered if this afternoon, my client texted me: “It’s so beautiful, I can’t stop looking at it!”

There’s something SO special about being trusted with someone’s vision and creating something that resonates even more deeply than they imagined.

#stefaniebalesfineart #sandiegoartist #abstractpainting #commissionpainting

P.S. these photos definitely don’t do this piece justice. There’s no way to capture the complex textures and color layers- so just know it’s 100x more luminous and dynamic in person 😘
What a pleasure it was to have in Ojai, now a piece of her will remain here for much longer.

Please check out her art portfolio.

In 2026, having a niche isn’t a flex.

As artists, we’re taught to pick a lane- but one of my greatest strengths as an artist has always been my range, across projects, mediums, approaches, and techniques.

This fall, I wasn’t working on a body of work. I was working across many.

Five commissioned projects.
Five mediums.
Five vastly different scales.
All unfolding simultaneously inside the studio.

Range isn’t a distraction for me- it’s the differentiator.
It’s how I serve wildly different clients with clarity and intention.
It’s how each project informs the next.

I don’t want to work inside a box, and I don’t believe artists need to niche down to be taken seriously. While a clear voice matters, I believe mastery looks like adaptability- and despite the vast differences in these works, I do think my voice speaks clearly in each of them.

I’m curious if you can see it too.

Which piece stopped you first- and why?
Scale, medium, subject, or something else entirely?

Save this if you’re an artist who refuses to be put in a single box.

Share it with someone who needs permission to trust their range.

Yesterday I checked off a bucket list item by speaking at TEDx ✨

I have a long, inspired history with

When I was a professor, I used to share the talks of artists and designers as inspiration for our project perspectives. (Some of my favorite talks were from Tim Brown of,, and )

I’ve been attending our local event since 2011, and a couple of years ago decided to make it a goal to give a talk of my own one day

This past January, a friend reached out to me out of the blue recommending that I apply (love you ). In my head I was still a couple of years out, but thought- hey, why not? I wrote and sent in my application that day, and ended up being called back as one of 20 out of nearly 600 applicants to audition live.

In the end, my talk wasn’t selected as it didn’t fit into the program curation, but a couple of months later I had the opportunity to apply to TEDx SDSU, and here we are.

My talk wasn’t flawless, but all in all I feel pretty good about it and am really proud of myself for setting out to do something big and then actually seeing it through

I can’t wait to share it with you when it goes live in a couple of months ♥️

A huge thank you to everyone who came to support. I hope you noticed your mention in my talk. XO
