Across the Alpine region, ancient pagan rituals mark the symbolic end of winter and the arrival of spring. Rooted in pre-Christian traditions, these rituals were meant to drive away cold, darkness and evil spirits, while welcoming light, fertility and new life.
Fire also plays a central role — bonfires are lit on hillsides to cleanse and protect the land, and to strengthen the sun as days grow longer.

I always wanted to experience this South Tyrolean tradition first hand and document it with my camera. This year, I finally got the chance.
Background: The lighting of the Sacred Heart Fires in South Tyrol date back to 1796. It originated when Tyrolean leaders vowed to place their land under the protection of the Sacred Heart of Jesus during times of war. Since then, on the third Sunday in June, large bonfires are lit on mountains and hills to renew this vow. The fires often form religious symbols like hearts, crosses, or inscriptions 🔥
