Mädchen in Weiß“.
//
During the Gründerzeit, child portraiture became an expression of bourgeois ambition and modern ideals of education, inspired by the luminous Impressionism of Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Mary Cassatt.
For her portrait of Margarete Catharina Litten, Sabine Lepsius drew upon James McNeill Whistler’s Symphony in White, No. 1: The White Girl, capturing the child in a fleeting, light-filled moment of striking immediacy.
The two portraits, on loan from the Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin, are on view at the through 7 June in the exhibition "Avantgarde: Max Liebermann and Impressionism in Germany".
