Now, have you ever heard the saying, “All looks and no brains”? We wouldn’t necessarily say that about Sapphire... but after watching her for several years, we’ve noticed she may think rather highly of herself. Let’s just say confidence has never been in short supply.
As for motherhood? Well... Sapphire hasn’t been very lucky with her offspring and hasn’t earned the title of Mother of the Year.
She has given birth eight times. Five of her foals are still alive, although two survived only because SRWHMG rescued them after they suffered life-threatening injuries.
To be fair, Sapphire has shown moments of genuine love and tenderness toward her babies—we’ve seen the proof with our own eyes. But more often than not, it was Shadowfax who stepped up as the attentive, nurturing parent.
We often say that animals’ live lives that parallel our own, and Sapphire is a wonderful reminder that, just like people, horses have all kinds of parenting styles. For every devoted super-mom like Venus, there’s another who seems perfectly content letting someone else handle a little more of the childcare.
Parenting quirks aside, Sapphire is thriving, enjoying life on the Salt River exactly where she belongs. And with that unforgettable blue eye sparkling in the Arizona sunshine, she’ll probably keep stealing hearts—and a little extra attention—for many years to come.

There are few places left in America where you can stand quietly and watch truly wild horses living exactly as nature intended. Here in Arizona, we are fortunate enough to witness that every day.
The Salt River wild horses are more than a breathtaking sight. They are families. They are survivors. They are a living part of our history and an irreplaceable part of our landscape.
Wild horses form lasting relationships, care for one another, and live within intricate family bands built on trust and cooperation. Their emotions are evident to anyone willing to slow down and watch.
Perhaps that’s why so many people connect with them. We recognize something of ourselves in them.
For generations these horses have inspired photographers, artists, writers, children, scientists, and millions of visitors who travel from around the world hoping to catch a glimpse of them roaming free. They contribute to Arizona’s tourism, play a natural role in the desert ecosystem by dispersing native seeds and grazing vegetation, and remind us that wild places—and wild things—still exist.
Yet despite everything they represent, they continue to face criticism and are too often blamed for problems they did not create. They are portrayed as something to remove rather than something to cherish.
We see them differently.
We see living beings with families, intelligence, purpose, and an undeniable right to remain where they have lived for generations.

WHO IS the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group:
Background and Mission: The Salt River Wild Horse Management Group focuses on the humane management of wild horses in Arizona. This management includes stabilizing populations through fertility control, maintaining fencing to keep horses off roads, and tracking the history and health of individual horses.
The Rescue Property: The organization operates a rescue property adjacent to the Tonto National Forest where they care for horses that have been rescued due to mortal injuries or other dangerous situations. Many of these rescued horses live together, maintaining their social relationships.
Volunteer Support: The group relies heavily on approximately 120 volunteers to assist in their efforts. Volunteers often join after learning about the horses through news coverage regarding roundups.
Sponsorship Opportunities: Caring for the horses costs between $300 and $400 per horse, covering expenses such as hoof care, dental care, and feed. The public can support these efforts by sponsoring a horse for a starting minimum of only $10 per month.

Every step we take on Earth has already been taken by someone before us—by another person, another animal, another life. The ground beneath our feet remembers. That is why it is important to walk these paths and, every now and then, to simply stop and listen. Listen for the voices of those who came before us as they quietly guide us forward.
Horses, too, listen for the voices of their ancestors. If you have hiked through the desert or along the riverbank, you have likely seen their trails. They are narrow, just wide enough for one person or one animal. They weave around trees, following routes that have remained unchanged for generations. They lead throughout the desert, across all 20,000 acres, connecting water, shelter, and life.
These are the same paths the Salt River wild horses travel today. Horses like Little Chief, Three Socks, Athena, Courage, and Jake are following trails first worn into the earth by their ancestors. They walk the footsteps of Wisdom, Half-Tail, Chief, Fiona, Hope, Jacob, and so many others. They are listening to the voices of those who came before them. Those voices have taught them where to find water, where to find safety, and how to survive. The wisdom of generations still lives in every hoofprint.
So, the next time you are at the river and come upon one of these paths, pause for a moment. Feel the quiet. Listen to the wind. As you walk that trail, remember that you are sharing a path that has carried countless lives before your own.

Two lawsuits are on the right track—Heber wild horse TRO which includes all of the Apache Sitgreaves, and Carter reservoir, both great wins. One lawsuit was unforunately lost for Montgomery Pass, and, heartbreakingly, enormous roundups are on the way at Mono Lake and Callahan, and lets not forget about Australia, boycott Australia! And ofcourse we have our own issues here at the Salt River, which we are trying to work out in our own ways. Please stay tuned.
All of these actions show you one glaring thing and let there be no mistake about it: the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management continue to demonstrate extraordinary hostility in their actions, toward America’s iconic historic wild horses—even while they are the very agencies charged with their protection.
Even despite the fact that there is a proven, humane way to manage wild horses all along.
Even despite the fact that wild horses provide tremendous economic value through tourism, contribute to wildfire risk reduction and help disperse live plant, grass and tree seeds across the landscape.
We commend every organization, advocate, volunteer, and attorney fighting the good fight.
We encourage the USFS and the BLM to turn course, while they still can.
We commented on the programmatic BLM EA this week, that continuing the cruel roundups while failing to use humane fertility control, is like continuing to mop the floor while failing to turn the faucet off. We hope an analogy might hit home with someone somewhere higher up?

The foal who helped save an entire herd, now needed to be saved himself.
On July 31, 2015, the same day an impound notice was issued to remove every Salt River wild horse, a tiny 🐴colt was born.
His name was Diamond, the son of Sapphire and Shadowfax.
Within days, his curious personality stole the hearts of Arizona. He looked at television cameras, whinnied at reporters, and quickly became the face of the fight to save the Salt River wild horses. His story led newscasts across the state, and the public rallied behind the herd.
In many ways, Diamond helped save them all.
Now it was Diamond who needed saving. When SRWHMG volunteers noticed Diamond was missing from his band on July 7, 2016, they searched for hours before finding him just after dark.
He was down, but alive.
He had suffered a horrific injury after getting his hoof caught in a cattle guard, tearing away much of the hoof wall from the coronet band. Unable to bear weight on his right front leg.
The next morning, detailed photographs were sent to veterinarians and our farrier. The prognosis was heartbreaking. Without intervention, infection would almost certainly reach the bone, leading to a slow and painful death. That was not going to happen. For nearly three days, dozens of volunteers worked tirelessly to save the little colt who had once inspired an entire state to save his herd.
Our president, Simone Netherlands, secured authorization for a rescue, and 45 SRWHMG volunteers rushed to Butcher Jones. The veterinarian, darter, roper, and trailer were already, but Diamond disappeared again.
