The Temple of the Tooth is a sacred Buddhist site in Kandy that houses the relic of the left tooth of Gautama Buddha. During the Kandyan Kingdom, it stood within the royal palace complex. The temple was first built by Wimaladharmasuriya I, but his structure was destroyed by Portuguese invaders. The present two-story building was later constructed by Sri Weeraparakrama Narendrasinghe and further developed by Nayakkar dynasty rulers.
Kandy, home to the temple, is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Daily rituals (pujas) are conducted three times by monks of the Malwathu and Asgiri sects. A special Wednesday ritual, Nanumura Mangal, symbolically bathes the relic in fragrant water believed to have healing properties.
