Everyone has their own risk tolerance level and everyone’s is valid (as long as it isn’t hurting anyone, eh?).
From my own experience, I felt 100% confident climbing like this with a baby on my chest.
My SIL feels 100% confident taking her 4 kids to Disneyland or on 8 hour car rides (I don’t feel confident about those 😆).
We all have our things! What’s important is that you listen to your gut, not someone else’s ✨
It’ll change your life.
and it doesn’t have to be big, I don’t know about you but my kids are perfectly happy playing in the one bush on a dirt patch in the middle of a parking lot and I’m pretty sure it still has the positive mental health benefits 😂
People sometimes ask “don’t you feel bad leaving your husband at home?”
A little. But tbh I also like traveling more than he does😆 and we always take him back to the favorite places we find!

Come up with your why. Research shows when you connect deeply with why you’re doing something, change comes easier. I’ve shared my why for risky play before but I’ll say it again:
I want my kids to listen to their own intuition about their capabilities over anyone else’s including mine. And I know how I’d feel if someone told me I couldn’t do this or that because it was too dangerous. I’d be ticked! So I’ve let them practice what they feel comfortable with from the beginning.
Spotting is a-ok when you’re feeling nervous. Keep your hands off but nearby and ready to catch a fall.
Instead of “be careful” or “that’s too dangerous” have some constructive phrases ready to facilitate your kids’ learning:
“Do you feel safe?”
“What is your plan for getting down?”
“Let’s do a risk assessment, what could happen?”
“Is your footing solid?”
When you’re getting nervous, take a breath. We all tend to hold our breath when we’re anxious.
Tell your kids you’re working on this. I’m sure they’ll be excellent accountabilibuddies.
Get ready to be amazed at what they can do!
You of course still have final say in terms of safety. This is not so push you to do something that doesn’t feel right. Always listen to your gut.
And of course, injuries can and do happen. That’s why it’s called risky play! You just have to decide if the risk of some injuries are worth the benefits to you and your family.
