I was first struck by Spandita’s work at the Kemper Museum, in Kansas City, in the summer of 2023. It was my first trip to the Midwest. And chancing upon her vibrant, intricately embroidered portraits in this context had me very curious about her artistic practice; while also emboldened to keep surfacing mine. Little did I know 2026 would see us in conversation at her studio space in New York!
The images hanging on the walls belong to a long-running body of work that has come to define Malik’s practice: Jāḷī, a collaborative photographic project created with women across India over the past six years.

Link in unserer Bio. ⬆️

Drawing on my own practice, which emphasizes collaboration and the redistribution of power in image-making, we will examine how your images operate within social, cultural, and artistic contexts.
