Anyone who knows me knows I’ve been a lifelong Tolkien fan. The books, the films, Middle-earth, all of it has lived in my heart for as long as I can remember. I’ve never tried to force my kids to love the things I love… but when my daughter started showing interest in Lord of the Rings on her own, it meant more to me than I can put into words.
We watched all the movies. Then the Hobbit movies. I read her The Hobbit. I’ve been reading her The Fellowship of the Ring. We’ve built Barad-dûr out of Legos. We’ve made LOTR Woobles together. And somehow, this world that shaped my childhood has now become part of hers too.
For her birthday, I surprised her with tickets to to meet the Hobbits and watch their panel. She had never been to Portland or even Oregon before, so getting to show her a new city, eat amazing food, and share that experience together made it even more special. She even got to watch me squeeze in a quick band practice between all the LOTR chaos this weekend.
We got the cutest treasures from the booth, and we even met an incredible llama named who we hugged more than once.
This was one of THE BEST weekends of both of our lives.
Sharing Middle-earth with my daughter, watching her fall in love with a world that has meant everything to me… that’s something I will carry forever. I also cried more times than I can count watching these films on the big screen again, especially during Return of the King.

All week long my daughter and I have been crocheting LOTR woobles and reading The Fellowship of the Ring in preparation for the best weekend ever.
We get to watch all three extended editions in theaters and head to for a meet and greet with Elijah Wood (Frodo), Sean Astin (Samwise), Dominic Monaghan (Merry), and Billy Boyd (Pippin, Fool of a Took), plus see their panel.
I truly cannot put into words how much it means to share my love of LOTR with my daughter and to experience this perfect weekend together.

I was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska. I moved to Seattle in 2004 at 19, chasing music, change, and a fresh start.
Growing up, I struggled with depression and anxiety, and I used food as a coping mechanism. By high school I weighed around 450 pounds. Eventually I started taking mixed martial arts, running, and riding my bike everywhere just to try and take control of my life again.
I had top surgery and a tummy tuck later on. Those surgeries gave me enough relief to stop thinking about ending my life every day. Music, friendships, and health saved me. Truly. I don’t think I’d still be here without all three.
Now I’m 40 and married to my best friend. We opened together. I run a record label I’m proud of. I still play extreme metal. And I’m finally reaching a place in my fitness and health where I feel proud of how I look and who I’ve become. Through my own journey, I’ve been able to inspire a lot of people to start, return to, or keep going with their own fitness paths — and that means the world to me.
I don’t have many photos of myself from when I was at my biggest. I threw a lot away before surgery because I felt embarrassed and ashamed. I wanted to erase that version of myself. Now I carry pride instead of shame. I love my life. Every day feels like a blessing.
