We really like the thinking behind this DSP bookshelf speaker build, build by a customer of ours, who pushed the boundaries of DIY Audio. Everything about the project feels carefully considered to get the maximum performance out of a compact enclosure.

Each speaker uses Dayton Audio TCP115-4 midwoofers and Dayton Audio ND28F-6 tweeters. 2x side-mounted passive radiators per speaker and a Sure/Wondom JAB4 amp. board with ADAU1701 DSP. A setup focused on flexibility, controlled tuning, and efficient use of cabinet space.

Certainly also due to the TCP115 woofer, with an Fs of 55 Hz and Qts of 0.45, the TCP is the ideal woofer to combine with passives in a small enclosure, to extend low-end response. The passive radiators help extend the low-end performance without needing large ports, while DSP control gives precise adjustment over the entire system response.

What makes this build especially interesting is the fully active approach. Instead of using a traditional passive crossover, the system relies on DSP for crossover integration, EQ, level matching, and future expandability with an adjustable subwoofer output for a potential 2.1 setup.

A custom subwoofer build, designed from the ground up. ๐Ÿ”Š

We really like seeing projects like this, where an idea slowly turns into a fully developed design. This one started with a clear goal: build a compact subwoofer that still goes deep and stays controlled, and itโ€™s great to see that idea carried through so consistently.

The build is based around the GRS 12SW-4HE driver in a ported 18 mm MDF enclosure. From the first simulations to the final CAD design, everything was developed step by step, with a clear focus on getting the tuning right rather than just making something that works.

In the end, it resulted in a 79.1 litre enclosure tuned to 21.5 Hz, with an f3 of 20.3 Hz and an f6 of 18.1 Hz. What we like here is that itโ€™s clearly designed for controlled, deep bass rather than just raw output.

From cutting panels to assembling and sealing the cabinet, itโ€™s a clean and well thought-out build, finished in semi-gloss black for a simple, solid look.

Powered by a M03 subwoofer amplifier and a DSP setup with dual DACs, everything comes together in a flexible and well-balanced system.

We really like how the enclosure is designed here. The built-in channels help get more out of a compact speaker. The Tang Band subwoofer delivers deep low-end, while the full-range drivers handle mids and highs, this small setup really packs a punch.
