At the Oceania Athletics Championships 🐊 🌴, athletes 🏃🏻♀️ were chasing Commonwealth Games dreams (also served as the qualification event) while I was chasing athletes; and occasionally chasing shade 🥵💦 Darwin humidity definitely deserves its own medal category.
Paired with my Sony A9 III, I shot mostly at 30fps and even gave 120fps⚡️a workout because, why not push things to the extreme? 😎
Major takeaways 🥡:
⚡ Agility – At just 1,840g, I handheld it 100% of the time. No monopod needed. My shoulders have officially submitted their thank-you note.
⚡ Autofocus – Four XD linear motors keeping up with athletes flying around the track while zooming in and out with tack sharp 🔪 focus throughout. A capability not far off, if not on par with, the recent prime GM telephoto lenses.
⚡ Zoom range – One lens covering the start line at 400mm to the finish line at 100mm from the same position. Less lens swapping, more shooting, fewer opportunities for me to drop something or missing the moments 😅
At the end of the first day using it, I was complaining about the stiffness of the zoom ring. This has affected my creation of zoom bursts 💥. Little did I know it features a dedicated Zoom Smoothness Switch located directly on the lens barrel (probably a new feature of Sony zooms). After I have flicked it to the smooth setting, I was a happy camper ⛺️.
Beautiful light 💡, incredible performances 🏃, and yes, enough humidity to remind me I’m not built for tropical life 🌅🎾📷
My own copy is already on backorder. The waiting game begins… ⏳😩
