Yi Peng takes place once a year in Chiang Mai, usually in November, and is celebrated together with Loy Krathong. During this time the whole city glows with lanterns, candles and floating baskets on the river.
I attended the CAD Yi Peng Lantern Festival, which is one of the major ticketed events held outside the city. If you’re planning to go, definitely book early because hotels and tickets sell out really quickly!
If you prefer staying in town, there are smaller celebrations around Tha Phae Gate and the Old City where you can still enjoy the atmosphere!
