The conversation doesn’t reach a conclusion because, in many ways, it can’t. The question still exists. The need to answer it still exists. That final line carries the exhaustion of having to return to the same place, to explain the same feelings, knowing they may still be met with the same assumptions.

It also echoes something deeply rooted in gospel music. A line isn't repeated because the congregation didn't hear it the first time. It's repeated because hearing it once has never been the point as repetition is what allows the words to settle.

Looking back, I didn’t realise I was starting something that would become such a big part of my life. Now, a year later, more than 60,000 people have found their way here.
Today I keep thinking about everything that’s happened in between.
I got into my archive bag because of Solange, and I never imagined she would become such a real part of this page’s story. Over the last year she has supported my work in ways that still blow my mind. What means the most is knowing that none of it was ever something she had to do. Every bit of encouragement and every time she’s shown up has come from genuine generosity, and I’ll always be grateful for that.
One of my favourite moments was Solange telling me I’m a phenomenal writer, one with brains and beauty 😭. It’s genuinely one of the biggest motivators I’ve ever received. Thank you for everything. It has been such an honour to spend the last year celebrating your work, and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully express how much your support has meant to me. I’m so glad this page exists because of you.
The same goes for Ms Tina, who has been supporting this page since there were fewer than twenty people here. She’s encouraged me from the very beginning, and her kindness has carried me through this year more than she probably knows.
And if you know anything about me, you know how much I loveeee me some Tracee Ellis Ross, so going from growing up watching and admiring her on screen to opening my comments and seeing her tell me “we are ready for your voice” is something I’ll never forget.
One thing I’ll always be grateful for is how much kindness has found its way to this page. From Solange and Ms Tina, to the incredible Saint Heron team, to everyone who continues to show up for my writing.

In describing Shakersss.mov, she called the project “a moving liturgy of praise… reverence for self, God, and the exalted mother Yemaya,” emphasising our profound connection to water and its vital role in existence. Yemaya, the Yoruba Orisha of the sea, is often associated with nurturing and protection. It’s interesting to think about alongside Solange being a Cancer, a water sign.
She once wrote that she was conceived in Egypt, “on a riverboat cruise on the Nile River to be exact. 1985.”
In that same essay, she spoke about never returning because she wasn’t ready to hear what Egypt would tell her about her own power, writing, “I’ve only ever felt safe in water. So many young creatives are carrying real talent with very little access to the spaces that could help them grow. We are learning how to build our dreams in borrowed rooms, on limited time, with resources that rarely match the size of our vision. Still, we continue because creating is not a hobby for us, it is how we understand ourselves and imagine our futures.
I am speaking not only for myself but for the young people I see every day who are trying to stay hopeful while navigating uncertainty about opportunity and financial reality. We are not asking for shortcuts. We are asking for acknowledgement and guidance, as well as environments where our work can be taken seriously.

My name is Chenai. I’m 17 and a Capricorn (of course), born December 28th. I’m also left-handed, apparently you guys found that interesting! Writing has always been close to my heart, and over the past year I’ve grown a real appreciation for learning about Solange Knowles.
