写真作家・西野壮平さんによる新刊写真集『Assembled 手の記憶』の刊行を記念し、展覧会を開催いたします。
会場では、写真集収録作品を中心に、マンダラを思わせるコラージュ作品、シルクスクリーンによるアートポスター、オブジェ作品を展示。多彩なメディウムを通して、『Assembled 手の記憶』の世界を立体的に紹介します。
西野壮平さんは、世界各地の都市を歩いて撮影した膨大な写真を手作業で繋ぎ合わせ、《Diorama Map》シリーズを制作してきました。その制作の背景には、都市の空気や人々の気配を捉え続けた膨大なスナップショットが存在します。
約25年にわたる作品を振り返り、「自分は何を見てきたのか」という問いのもと、約2年をかけて写真を選定・編集。自身との対話を重ねながら生まれた288ページの写真集『Assembled 手の記憶』は、その軌跡を凝縮した一冊です。

西野壮平
1982 年生まれ。歩くこと、旅を通して得た経験や記憶をもとに制作活動を続けている。近年の主な展示と活動に、「日本の新進作家展 vol.10」(2012 年・東京都写真美術館)、「フェスティバル Images Vevey」(2012 年・ヴヴェイ、スイス)、「Of Walking」(グループ展、2013年・ Museum of Contemporary Photography, シカゴ)「New Work: Sohei Nishino Exhibition」(個展、2016年・サンフランシスコ近代美術館)、「T3 Photo Festival TOKYO 2023」などがあり、 国内外で展示発表を行なっている。アメリカのノースカロライナ州の Cassilhaus ではレジ デンスプログラムに参加(2016年)。V&A ダンディー(スコットランド)で行われたグループ展でのレジデンスプログラムでは、滞在制作と同美術館で作品を展示した(2024年)。アメリカのスタンフォード大学にあるDavid Rumsey Map Centerでは、地図についての研究と講演(2025年)も行なっている。

“Short Stories” is a series of small books compiling Nishino’s masterpiece “Diorama Map”. “Diorama Map” is a huge diorama created by walking through various cities and piecing together on canvas a vast number of photographs taken from all angles, including bird’s eye view, elevated view, and from the street. The specimens of cities, created from the artist’s memories and experiences, equally capture the people, animals, and nature that coexist in the area.
In “Short Stories”, Nishino once again observes the city he has created, cutting out parts of the work as if to re-shoot it, and reconstructing it by tracing his memories. How Nishino walked the land, what he felt, and the humor contained in the collage create a depth that differs from the experience of seeing the art work in front of one’s eyes.
By fitting such a large artwork into a small book, the book maintains the feeling of a bird’s-eye view of the city and its people that you get when you look at “Diorama Map”, also the book is designed in such a way as to increase interest in the actual size of the artworks.
This series also contains the idea of communicating with the people of the future by recording fragments of a city that continues to change.
The first in the series is the city of Beppu, Oita in Japan photographed in 2020. In this tourist destination famous for its hot springs, Nishino photographed as many as 200 hot springs. Many of the shots are taken indoors, capturing more of the people’s expressions. It is contains short essays reflecting on the trip by Nishino.

SOHEI NISHINO
“study of anchorage”
I have been working on the works which relate to the act of moving and walking.
For me, the restriction of movement under corona virus forced me to think about the true nature of my creation itself. 4 years ago, I have moved my studio which located in a small fishing town called Heda in Izu peninsula.
For over two months under corona virus infection, everyday, I have always been to the sea near by and just watching it. There are lots of ships in the harbor, and fishermen were also watching the sea vaguely wondering when they can go fishing again.
I daily photographed the shadow of the ropes of the ship which moves according to the vibration of the waves.
I don’t know if I reflected myself over those small ships which are bound to the land with ropes. Maybe I was trying to catch the signals from the nature, that waves created by its fluctuation.
Anxiety, impatience, and various thoughts which has been inside me during the time of corona infection, appeared as a line and it echoed inside me as if it was a sutra.

Born in 1982. Nishino produces works based on his personal experiences obtained through walking and travel. His works are shown in major Museums and Festivals around the world including “A Different Kind of Order” at the Triennale of the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York, solo exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). He was selected as the Foam Talent 2013, Prix Pictet Space shortlist in 2017 and winner for MAST Foundation for photography award 2018.

私は移動することや歩くことをテーマに写真で作品を作っている。
そんな私にとってこのコロナウィルスによる移動自粛は作品を作ることの本質を強く見つめさせられた。
私は約４年前から作品作りのベースとなるアトリエを西伊豆の戸田という漁師町に構えているのだが、
コロナ禍の間約２ヶ月間は毎日のように近くの海へ足を運び、海を眺めていた。
多くの船が停泊する港では、漁師達も同じくいつ漁に出れるのかとぼんやり海を眺めていた。
私はロープの影が波の振動によって変化する様子を毎日写真に撮っていた。
一本のロープで陸に繋がれた小舟に自分自身を投影していたのか、
または波が作り出す揺らぎに自然からのsignalを感じ取ろうとしていたのか。
コロナ禍の時間の中で感じていた私自身の不安や焦り様々な想いが線となり現れ、
それが自分にお経のように響いた。

It has been created for a year from last May. I used about 30000 picture that I photographed while trekking and all this are by film.
It was so straggled to bring 300~400rolls in my bag until 5600m high point but I was luckily to walk with very nice assistant and Shelpa too that was so helpful.
Mt Everest and other mountains were always beautiful during trek but I was more than interested to see local people who working and living in mountains that even in 5500m high point. So I showing mountain lines to focus on the many of small villages to see local life in this Madura.
It can’t takes out from my studio cause too big.. it will keep putting right this so you can come over to see actual piece if you in Japan!
ようやく新作が完成しました。
これは昨年5月にネパールのエベレスト(チョモランマ)のトレッキングへ行った時に撮ったもので、ルクラという村からエベレストベースキャンプ、ゴーキョピークなど約5600メートルまでの道のりにフォーカスした作品です。
もちろん目の前にそびえ立つエベレストやその周辺の山々には常に魅了されていましたが、それよりもその道沿にある人々の生活や仕事、自然環境などに興味を抱き、人々が作り出した山の線をテーマに撮影、制作を行いました。
フィルムを使ってることもあり色々大変なこともありましたがアシスタントのコモリ君とシェルパのコモルさん(偶然にも名前が1文字違い)に助けられ無事撮影しました。
これは約5メートルあり、作ったはいいがアトリエから外に出せない為しばらくはこの状態にしておきます。なのでもしご興味ある方がいれば実際の作品を観にアトリエにいらして下さい。
