Kolkata, for me, has always been less about landmarks and more about how life happens around them.
This is my attempt to document that rhythm—in five frames.

1. What my city is famous for
Howrah Bridge is probably the most photographed structure here - but I didn’t want the usual frame.
From a rooftop I randomly found, I saw the city flowing under it.
The yellow taxis, the layers of roads, the constant movement - it’s not just a bridge, it’s the city breathing.

2. Something only locals know
Madho Bhawan is one of those places you don’t really “visit” - you stumble upon it.
An old octagonal courtyard, worn down over time, yet still standing with character.
Looking up from inside, it almost feels like the building is framing the sky for you.
Quiet, hidden, but very Kolkata.

3. One portrait in my city
At Mullick Ghat flower market, everything moves fast - but some faces stay with you.
This flower seller, standing with the Howrah Bridge behind him, felt like a frame that connected two worlds -
the chaos of the market and the permanence of the city’s structure.
It’s a portrait, but also a story of everyday life here.

4. The vibe of my city
The ghats are never just ghats.
They’re meeting points, resting places - and sometimes, cricket grounds.
This moment wasn’t planned. Just kids playing by the river, with the city quietly existing around them.
That’s Kolkata for me - nothing is staged, everything just happens.

5. My favourite thing about my city
Towards sunset, the city softens.
The noise fades, the light changes, and everything slows down for a bit.
Out on the river near Prinsep Ghat, watching the sun dip behind the bridge -
this is probably my favourite version of Kolkata.

Kolkata isn’t perfect, and that’s exactly why I keep coming back to shoot it.

This birthday, I gifted myself something simple — a second-hand Fujifilm X-T200 from Metro Gali.

Not the newest. Not the fastest.
But the moment I picked it up, something felt… right.

The light weight, the colors straight out of camera, the way it just disappears in your hand —
today I didn’t overthink, didn’t chase perfection.

I just walked. Observed. Waited. Shot.

Somewhere between harsh sunlight, narrow lanes, shadows and faces —
I felt that connection again.
The kind that made me fall in love with photography in the first place.

After a hectic week, this felt like therapy.
No pressure, no expectations — just seeing.

Planning to head out again this weekend, not to create…
but to keep training my eyes, one frame at a time.

Funny how a 5-year-old camera can bring you back to yourself.

Kolkata never shouts.
It decays quietly.

These streets raised me.
Before cameras, before stories, before ambition —
there were lanes, balconies, pigeons, tram wires and people who never knew they were part of history.

I don’t shoot Kolkata to romanticise it.
I shoot because I am afraid one day it will stop existing in this form.

Every peeling wall is a timeline.
Every verandah is an unfinished sentence.
Every face is a novel no one will publish.

The wide lens is not a stylistic choice.
It is a necessity —
because here, life does not happen in isolation.
It happens in layers.
Architecture.
Dust.
Light.
Birds.
Movement.
Silence.
This is not nostalgia.
This is documentation.

You don’t always need a huge camera to make meaningful photographs.
What truly matters is how you see — the light you wait for, the frame you choose, and the story you decide to tell.
These frames were shot entirely on a smartphone.
No shortcuts, no gimmicks — just patience, perspective, and intent.
Walking through familiar streets, watching the city breathe, letting moments unfold naturally.
Capturing architecture, atmosphere, and everyday poetry — as honestly as I can.
This is my city.
This is Calcutta — as I see it.
