Emus (yalabidi in Malgana language) are part of everyday life here in Shark Bay. Funny-looking feathered friends who aren’t always so friendly. Dads strolling around with their chicks, sometimes only loosely supervising — leaving them behind at the mini golf, never looking before crossing the road and leaving big, splatty poos all over the footpaths.
But they’re also, quintessentially, big feathery bush chooks doing their best to look after their brood and navigate our tiny town on the west Oz desert coast. Co-inhabitants.
Also known to steal a boiled egg straight from your hand through the car window if you’re not ready for it (my daughter can tell you ALL about that 🫠😆).

“For By the Bay, I stepped beyond my usual practice to explore printmaking and mixed media. My works draw on Shark Bay’s striking landforms, using layered techniques to echo the region’s natural processes of erosion, sedimentation and time.
Much like the iron oxide quartz sands, blown by strong easterly winds over millennia, or the rich marine deposits left when sea levels were higher, this landscape is formed by the resources available - much like the supplies of an artist living in remote Western Australia”

I specifically chose the tiger shark for thaaka’s shape. As the bay’s keystone predator species, she’s not only beautiful but commands a huge amount of respect in her environment. And of all the elasmobranchs, it’s the tiger that I personally think of in regards to the bay.
While Shark Bay was aptly named so, the most abundant and commonly seen is the small and shy nervous shark/whaler that you can often spot in large schools in shallow waters 🦈
In researching this piece, I compiled the list of species from the Shark Bay Ecosystem Research Project and. Many species I’d never heard of, let alone seen, so drawing each and every one of them has greatly enriched my knowledge. It’s also sharpened my awareness of which species inhabit where, which are more commonly seen and where, how they reproduce (only few have egg casings!) and the many shapes and sizes of their teeth 🦷
