I love progress pictures because it really shows the artist pour all their energy, craftmanship and love into the piece. But of course people using AI found a way to fake their way through that one too - AI “art” is no art at all, and generating these fake progress videos only proves that. Pick up a pencil FFS. A few years ago I was quite successful in promoting and selling my work online. I mainly carved scenes involving women in a meditative state, often in nature or with a cat in their lap. It feels like since the moment I started making different work (more like the woodcut in these pictures), sales started to decline.
There’s this trap out there for me, that lures me into making art that previously sold well (even though I have really moved on from it). I call it a trap because whenever I give into it and try to make “art that sells”, the art actually doesn’t sell at all. And then I’m left with a drawer full of prints I don’t really feel good about. So of course, staying true to myself is the way to go! But it’s not bringing me any income at the moment.
I’m not telling you this because I’m looking for pity, I just want to be honest about it. I see a lot of makers here doing crazy tricks to please the algorithm, making trendy (empty) art and acting like spending all this time on those things is all worth it.
Stay true to the things that make you tick, everyone 😘 And buy my art while you’re at it 😜
