‘Muerteada Femenil’ by Sofía Navarrete Zur documents how women in the Etla district, Oaxaca, Mexico have subverted a historically male-dominated Day of the Dead tradition, following high rates of femicide. In response to gender-based violence, women in these communities began organizing the Muerteadas, transforming the celebration into an act of resistance, agency and collective healing, challenging the entrenched machismo in the region.

3. Lucy Ruiz García (54) adjusts the details of her bell-covered costume on 1 November 2025, which was handmade with her son for the Muerteada and can weigh up to 40 kilograms.
4. Aranza Mendoza Ávila (25) dances beneath fireworks from a pyrotechnic ‘torito’ on the central baseball field on 15 November 2025, after performing a satirical theatrical act integral to the Muerteada.

Violence against women in Oaxaca shows no sign of stopping:
There have been 79 femicides this year alone and over 1,200 in the last decade.
Amidst this grief, the women of Oaxaca have forged their own response:
the Muerteada Femenil, a space they carved out to denounce violence, survive, and take back the night.

This holistic approach reveals social, economic, and ethnic differences shaping experiences united by violence, resistance, hope, and community mobilisation. The collaborative storytelling empowers participants to reclaim their narratives. Embedded within NGOs’ outreach, it raises awareness and provides a mirror reflecting resilience. Challenging dominant narratives, it showcases the diversity of violence forms, crucial for developing solutions.
