Kaushik and I were talking about this the other day. We probably have a few more years where our kids still want to climb into our bed, cuddle, and think we are their favorite person. So we are choosing to soak it in.
People will say a parent child relationship is for life. Of course it is. I still cuddle with my mom 👀
But we were all kids once, and the truth is we all grew up.
Somewhere around ten or so, life starts filling up with school, friends, crushes, and then building your own world. There is a season where parents are your whole life, and then a season where they are part of it.
And I want to maximize the season where we are their favorite person.
We did not sleep train, partly for that reason. Maybe we wanted them more than they needed us, and yes, it came with a cost. Less sleep some nights. Splitting rooms on others. Moments where we wished they slept longer and easier. We were also lucky to have a flexible work life, so we could absorb it.
But there was not a single day we did not love the warmth, the cuddles, the little kisses. It was kind of addictive.
And sleep training is not wrong at all. If it works for your family, please do it, especially for two working parents, it can be a game changer. Every parent is just trying to find the balance that keeps everyone okay, and there is no single right way to raise your kids and soak in love.
The point is not sleep training or not. The point is choosing what makes your family feel happy, connected, and at peace in these fleeting years.
When we had Nishka, Kaushik and I made a decision to keep traveling with our kids. We also accepted that travel would look very different than it did when it was just us.
Before kids, it was all about the Instagram spots. Bar hopping, restaurant hopping, walking all day, cute outfits, and a hundred photos.
That was a different kind of fun.
Now fun is sharing one ice cream cone.
Running down cobblestone streets. Taking them to museums and the zoo. Watching their faces light up when they see something new.
The real game changer was tempering expectations so we could drop the FOMO and let travel mean something new, seeing the world through their eyes.
What we changed:
💛 We stopped using TikTok as the itinerary. Not every recommendation is toddler friendly
💛 We let go of checklists and the pressure to see everything. The goal became simple - happiness for everyone, even if that meant a park day
💛 Nothing at the cost of the kids’ comfort. If an activity felt like too much, it was a NO, non negotiable.
💛 We planned at least a few kid happy things every day, not just what we wanted to do.
💛 We stopped forcing a new restaurant or café daily and kept meals flexible around the kids
💛 We built in downtime on purpose. Some days meant staying in or early nights
💛 We intentionally chose stroller friendly places and easy neighborhoods to navigate with little ones
💛 We lowered the must see list and raised the must enjoy bar
Travelling with kids has taught us so much but above all, that life is actually pretty simple. Seeing Nishka and Niah find happiness in the smallest things keeps reminding us where the value of life truly lies.
P.S. The Zurich Zoo was genuinely so fun. Tons of animals, the kids were obsessed, and it’s set up so well for winter with indoor spots to warm up, still see animals, and take breaks from the cold. Totally worth it.
We took a little break from work. It was freezing out there, but the Christmas feels and chocolate in every form kept us warm.

Traveling with kids is still never easy. Things can be unpredictable no matter how much you plan, but some planning can definitely minimize the hassle.
Here are some tips I have learned that have personally helped me.
✈️ Relying on flight food and not taking enough snacks
Airplane meals are unpredictable and kids can get picky and hungry. Pack more snacks than you think you need. Somehow kids are always hungrier on flights.
✈️ Booking the cheapest flight instead of one that suits your child’s sleep schedule
Remember you are dealing with an overtired toddler at 30,000 feet. If you can, always prioritize booking flights based on your kids sleep window. I always try night flights for longer than 6 hours and day flights for less than 6.
✈️ Forgetting extra outfits
Spills, throw up, diaper leaks, mess can always happen. Even a little water on my daughter and she wants a change. I pack at least one full change for all of us in carry on.
✈️. Boarding without letting them run around
Let the kids walk the terminal, climb stairs, do a little race to that sign, anything. Even 15 minutes of movement helps them sleep better on flights. Pack extra socks in case they do not want to wear shoes.
✈️ Not planning for ear pressure
If their ears hurt, it can ruin the entire flight. Always prep something to swallow for takeoff and landing like a paci, bottle, or snacks. If your child is prone to ear pain, ask your pediatrician about Motrin or Tylenol.
✈️ Packing all essentials in one checked bag
Bags get delayed or lost. Split key items and clothes between bags, and keep must haves with you in cabin.
✈️ Skipping layers
Toddlers can feel hot or cold through the flight. I do breathable base layers, socks and a light but warm hoodie which can be easily removed.
I’ve also compiled a packing list for 5 and under with products. Comment PACKING and I will send it over. I know this whole “comment to get” process is annoying but it is the easiest way for me to share.

Living so far away makes it hit harder. The house feels quieter. And the small things I used to roll my eyes at are the exact things I miss most.
Before mom went, she cooked days worth of food so for a little while I would not have to think about meals. So I could rest. So I could just get through my days without one more thing to manage. That’s how moms love is.
And now I already miss all the food she fusses about, the way she insists I take one more bite, the warm check ins, the long talks that somehow make everything feel easier.
And it made me wonder, will we be able to love our kids in that exact quiet, constant way. The way our moms do. The kind of care that shows up even after they have left the house.
A parents love really is unconditional. I have never taken it for granted, but after having my daughters, I feel it in my bones. I do not even fight my mom the same way anymore.
Because now I understand what sits behind the reminders, the nagging, the checking in. It is love.
