Yesterday we were lucky enough to visit Sumiyoshi Koito at his enchanting house, unchanged from the 50’s when his grandmother had lived there. One of his lovely students was having her weekly lessons with him. Sumiyoshi Shachū is a performing arts group from Ichikikushikino, Kagoshima, led by Sumiyoshi, one of the few male geisha-style performers active today. The group carries on the tekoshansen tradition, an old town-geisha culture once found in Kagoshima, through dance, shamisen, singing, and playful banter.

Their performances are sincere and unembellished, focused on keeping a local art form relevant rather than recreating stereotypes of geisha culture.

Children also participate, giving the group a strong community feel. They take part in events and festivals within and outside the prefecture, quietly but steadily sharing a piece of Kagoshima’s cultural heritage.

Sumiyoshi Shachū has around 60 students, with children starting as young as three years old. Their mission is to preserve and promote the traditional culture of the Kagoshima region and the local arts and crafts that support their performances. Thank you so much for introducing us. It was a magical afternoon
Travelling quite some way south from Kyoto we have come to Kurashiki, with its entirely distinct architecture. It’s a remarkable small town and we have rather fallen in love with it and its incredible museums. The perfectly preserved old quarter has narrow waterways winding through traditional black and white houses and stores for rice. Our charming guide, Shinichi, told us that this house was lived in by a “prominent merchant, a descendent of a capable Samurai”. Built in 1796 it reflects the success of the Ohashi family who made a fortune developing rice fields and salt farms as well as in banking! The large entrance gate and open courtyard are symbols of their high rank and wealth and the house has a magical atmosphere despite now being encroached on by some towering 70’s hotels. It is not a typical Edo period timber building and was designated as an Important Cultural Property in 1978, consisting of the main house, the tenement gate, the rice storehouse, and the internal storehouse. Walls were built of clay to safeguard against fire (often unsuccessfully in other buildings) and the architecture includes characteristic Kurashiki elements including beautiful lattice-work and windows. Inside are tatami-floored public rooms with sliding doors and hanging scrolls, as well as private quarters, storage rooms, and a kitchen as beautiful as any I have seen. Most extraordinary of all is that for an entire hour we were the only visitors.
The gardens and tea houses of the Katsura Imperial Villa, designed in the mid 17th century in Kyoto. Every bit as beautiful as I had imagined, we were guided through the exquisite garden, along paths paved with both natural and cut stones, some lined with live bamboo fences. The guard seemed genuinely alarmed at some points by our gasps and exclamations but surely every visitor has the same astonished reaction? The lake and its shoreline come in and out of view, allowing unexpected glimpses of tea houses and pavilions, with their generous verandas and papered sliding doors. Architectural tricks abound, specific to each of the 9 buildings; basins to allow moonlight to reflect boat landings, strategically placed lanterns to represent lighthouses on a distant cape, angles to allow the wind to whisper through pine trees, hidden stores for musical instruments, and all surrounded by exquisitely manicured trees and plants reflected in the lake. Blissful serenity!
