On June 9, 2026, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Staff Sergeant Given C. Grooms, missing from World War II.

Staff Sergeant Grooms entered the U.S. Army Air Forces from Tennessee and served with the 718th Bombardment Squadron, 449th Bombardment Group (Heavy). He was a crew member aboard a B-24H Liberator, serial number 41-29217, when it was shot down on January 30, 1944, while returning from a bombing mission against enemy forces near Udine, Italy.

The aircraft crashed on the Isle of Morgo in the Adriatic Sea. Two members of the crew were recovered and identified shortly after the crash, while the remaining crewmen were listed as missing. Between 2010 and 2014, U.S. recovery teams investigated the crash site and recovered material evidence and human remains associated with the loss of the aircraft.

In 2015, the remains of navigator Second Lieutenant Harry B. McGuire were identified from among those recovered. Continued scientific analysis ultimately led to the identification of Staff Sergeant Grooms on June 9, 2026, more than 82 years after the loss of the aircraft.

Staff Sergeant Grooms is memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Florence American Cemetery in Italy. His identification leaves five members of the crew still unaccounted for.

Eighty-two years ago, on June 6, 1944, this same stretch of sand was one of the most dangerous places on Earth. Under intense German fire, thousands of Allied soldiers landed here during D-Day, beginning the liberation of Western Europe. The footage shown here was filmed by Sgt. Richard Taylor, a U.S. Army combat cameraman who landed on Omaha Beach with the assault forces, preserving a remarkable visual record of that historic day.

Never forget!

For D-Day, the mission of the 3rd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, commanded by Lt. Col. Robert L. Wolverton, was centered on securing key crossings of the Douve River near Carentan and Brévands. These routes were vital, as they could be used by German forces to move reinforcements toward Utah Beach.

During the airborne assault into Normandy (Operation Neptune), the battalion was widely scattered during the drop, severely disrupting its ability to assemble and carry out its objectives. Lt. Col. Wolverton was killed in action on June 6, 1944.

This footage shows Lt. Col. Wolverton and other men of the 3rd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment as they prepare for their first combat jump.

Approximately 82 years ago, cameramen William Nehez and Fred Cerfeda filmed paratroopers of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. These men became known as the “Filthy 13.”

But over time, the legend has grown beyond the reality.

The Filthy 13 were not the entire demolition platoon of the 506th. They were the 1st Battalion’s demolition section. The 2nd and 3rd Battalion sections also existed, but are often forgotten or misidentified.

This has led to a long-standing confusion: the “Filthy 13” label is now often used for the entire demolition platoon, even appearing that way on monuments like Brévands.

Part of the confusion comes from wartime attachments and storytelling. For D-Day, the 1st Battalion section was temporarily attached to the 3rd Battalion. (Here, they served alongside the 3rd Battalion’s demolition section.) And most surviving veteran accounts come from Filthy 13 members, whose stories and photos dominate the historical record.

Meanwhile, the men of the 2nd and 3rd Battalion sections are rarely mentioned.

Men like Art DeMaio (2nd Section), killed on 6 June 1944, and section leaders Sgt. Myers and Sgt. Davidson, killed during Market Garden, have largely been overshadowed by the myth.

They were there too 82 years ago, jumping into Normandy alongside the Filthy 13, just without the face paint.
82 years later, a relative finally visits Antonio Luna’s grave for the first time.
