The Embassy of Switzerland in Seoul
가장 인상 깊었던 것은 물을 다루는 방식이었다. 이 건물은 빗물을 모아 외부 조경과 청소 등에 다시 사용하는데, 중정에는 이를 위한 특별한 건축적 장치가 마련되어 있다. 비가 오면 물이 사슬을 따라 흘러 세 개의 돌 위를 지나 홈통으로 들어간다. 마치 하나의 조형물처럼, 혹은 한 장의 그림처럼 보이지만 실제로는 빗물을 재활용하기 위한 시스템이다. 이 돌들은 스위스의 라인강, 론강, 티치노강에서 온 것이라고 한다. 이런 디테일만 보아도 이 건축이 얼마나 각별하게 기획되었는지 느낄 수 있다.
또 하나 좋았던 것은 대형 목조건축이 구현되는 방식이었다. 내부의 목구조는 단순히 따뜻한 분위기를 만드는 재료를 넘어, 공간의 성격을 분명하게 만든다. 여기에 구조를 위한 시공 방식, 설비, 빛을 다루는 요소들이 자연스럽게 맞물려 있다는 인상을 받았다. 각각이 따로 드러나기보다 하나의 건축으로 정리되어 있다는 점이 특히 인상적이었다.
마치 정교하게 설계된 첨단기기를 보는 듯한 느낌도 있었다. 재료와 공간은 무엇보다 아날로그적인데, 그 안에 보이지 않는 최첨단 시스템이 정교하게 삽입되어 있는 듯한 낯선 경이로움이 있었다. 모든 것이 치밀하게 맞물려 작동하는 모습은 단순하고 심플한 디자인 뒤에 얼마나 많은 노력과 특별한 공정이 숨어 있을지를 짐작하게 했다.
마당을 중심으로 공간을 풀어낸 방식도 인상 깊었다. 한옥의 원리를 현대적으로 간결하게 해석한 이 건물은 그래서 ‘스위스 한옥’이라고도 불린다. 목조를 통해 한옥을 현대적으로 재해석한 사례를 찾는다면, 이 건물은 단연 가장먼저 방문해야할 건축이다.

그럼에도 여전히 매력적이고

Renzo Piano 재단에서 출판한 퐁피두 관련 책을 넘기다 보니
1971년 공모전 당시 건축계 심사위원 명단이 다시 눈에 들어온다.

심사위원도 역대급이였네.
‘선은재’는 은퇴 이후의 삶을 도심 속에서 지속할 수 있도록 한 소형 주택입니다. 노년의 생활 패턴을 고려해 병원, 도서관, 대중교통 등 도시 인프라와 가까운 입지를 선택하고, 주차장 없이도 일상에 불편함이 없도록 구성했습니다. 침실은 1층에, 거실과 주방은 2층에 두어 계단 이동을 최소화했고, 보이드 공간을 통해 채광과 개방감도 확보했습니다.
좁은 골목 안에 있는 탓에 공사는 전 과정에서 제약이 많았습니다. 이에 콘크리트 사용을 줄이고, 공장 제작 후 현장에서 조립하는 냉간성형강 구조의 건식 공법을 적용했습니다. 외장에는 시간이 흐를수록 깊이를 더하는 재료를 사용해 주변 환경과의 조화를 이끌었으며, 작은 규모지만 안정적인 구조와 단정한 비례로 오래된 골목에 자연스럽게 녹아드는 건축을 지향합니다.
