Those were the first words of the director of my former tutoring academy; I hadnāt seen him in 5 years, yet it seemed my college choice was all he cared about.

I muttered the college I got into at the timeābarely top 100. He frowned, disappointed. I guess he expected a valedictorian, but got a weird outcast making stupid videos for a living.
In high school, I chased the āAsian overachieverā stereotype. My classmates competed in academics, so I tried tooātaking many APs, grinding a top 1% SAT after 4 brutal attempts. But as I conformed, I felt my personality slip away.
YouTube started to feel like a white personās job. I didnāt think I had the privilege of playing games for a living when I shouldāve been studying. My avatarās face in thumbnails got whiter and whiter. I lied during streamsāswapping my āē«éā dinner for āspaghetti.ā Meeting creators, I joked, āIf my fans found out Iām Asian, theyād unsubscribe.ā I knew it wasnāt true, but it still haunted me.
6 months ago, I lost someone close. With that, I lost half my driveāthey were one of my two biggest motivators, along with YouTube. But seeking comfort in YouTube felt empty when I had to pretend to be someone I wasnāt. Despite the privilege of doing YouTube full-time, putting on my headset felt painful, forcing myself to be a white version of me. Hiding my identity only catalyzed my struggles. My background and culture shouldāve been assets, not burdens.
While face-revealing will help me meet fans, network, and create cool videos, Iām doing this for me. Itās okay to be Asian in a white-dominated industry. Iām proud of the community Iāve built, and the owner doesnāt need to be hidden.
Maybe my story inspires others, or not lmao idk. Iām happy I learned Iām more than my grades or college. Iām still Slatābut not white.
