1. During a facial, we properly cleanse, exfoliate, and soften the skin first. This step is essential for safely loosening congestion so extractions can be done with minimal trauma.
2. Our tools are fully disinfected and sanitized, and we also use an autoclave to eliminate bacteria at a medical-grade level. This goes far beyond a quick rinse with soap and water.
Even if you’re using an extractor or your fingers, at-home tools are rarely truly sterile and often end up right back in a drawer.
3. When you extract on your own, it’s easy to apply too much pressure or target pimples that aren’t ready. This can lead to unnecessary trauma, inflammation, and even scarring. As estheticians, we only extract what is safe and fully ready to be removed.
4. At-home extractions can also spread bacteria to surrounding pores, especially without proper antibacterial prep or aftercare. So if you ever feel like that pimple keeps coming back no matter what… that could be why.
5. When you come to an appointment with open wounds from picking or popping at home, there’s only so much I can safely do. I can’t perform certain treatments or use active exfoliants on compromised skin, because I’m now treating an open wound instead of targeting congestion. If it had been left alone, I could have safely extracted it and done much more for your skin.
