Examining mass through a series of white box studies. By removing material and detail, the massing focuses on placement, proportion, and orientation in relation to the site, while the drawings examine how volumes are experienced in elevation. Both 3D massing and hand-drawing inform each other as the design progresses.
These studies also test the depth of overhangs and the extent of decks in response to the Pacific Northwest climate, where protection from rain and control of light are central to how the buildings are used and experienced.
These explorations are used to understand how each volume meets the ground, how it is experienced on approach, and how the three buildings relate as a group.

These drawings record early planning studies for a group of three houses positioned between the lake edge and a steep hillside rising approximately 150 feet. The project is organised as a sequence from water to ridge, with the lake house set within the trees below at the shore, the main house at the hillside ridge with extended views across Lake Washington toward the Seattle skyline, and the guest house behind. A gondola connection is used as a means of moving between these points, reinforcing the vertical relationship of the site. These early planning studies for the three houses consider program as a set of relationships rather than fixed rooms. Circular adjaceny diagrams test scale, functional proximity and flow, establishing a spatial logic before form is resolved.
